I salute everyone I shoot down, doesn't matter how they play. Unless I am still engaged , then I try to salute them a bit later but sometimes the buffer has scrolled past their name and I am too old to remember whom it was.
I wait for the salute from folks that kill me. If it does not happen after a few minutes then I throw them one, again, doesn't matter how the play.
I do not think of the <S> as something to be given when you only respect the guy, or like him, or think he is a good guy, or think he is a good pilot, or think it was a good fight. I throw it out as an acknowledgement of our encounter.
I never say a thing about not getting a salute from anyone for any reason, it is their choice.
I also, almost always apologize for a collision, dosen't matter if I think it was my fault or not.
There is really only one derragatory thing I do. If you go HO with me and you die and I live you get this quick little PM from me:
"<S> Live by the HO, Die by the HO"
