Fire?
« on: March 10, 2011, 10:01:36 PM »
My squadie splash01's father was a m16 gunner in world war two. His dad told stories about him shooting at airplanes. He shot down a fw190, and did many hedge-row "classified" missions. Anyway he say his group was shooting at a ju88 and it's motor caught fire and the plane dove to the ground. He looked in his binoculars looking for the pilot and gunners that he thought bailed out. He said the ju88 fly off into the distance as soon as they moved and the fire went out, so in RL you could dive and possibly get the fire out and fly back? Why not in AH?

ahh, ive heard of stories like that. halifax II over hamburg i think? enginw caught fire, pilot said HOLD ON, dove 3000 feet and put out the fire. something like that. if it happened in AH, depending on how close i was to the deck, id just bail. wouldnt use it really. btw if its on fire, wouldnt that be oil, therefore unable to be put out with just air?

Usually it's fuel fires in AH.

What else would it be in AH or in real life?

It's possible to get the fire out in real life. As stated above we have fuel fires in AH which are a lot harder to put out, some aircraft has special systems (don't remember the exact name) to put out the fire in the fuel tanks but they did not always work and far not all planes had them.

The only fire fighting systems I'm aware of on WWII aircraft where extinguishers that discharged inside the engine cowling....not going to help a fire at a fuel tank.

The idea of diving to put a fire out is the same as blowing on a match...you're changing the fuel/O2 mixture to a condition to lean to sustain the fire.   Of course at first you're also going to accelerate/intensify the fire.  :O

what else should happen if you get a gun damaged? it can shoot and you still have to carry the weight of the ammo around for it, which also would throw off the balance of the plane somewhat, maybe not noticably but I am sure it would on paper

I think he wants the gun to malfuction while damage, for ex. The gun while like eplode the round inside possibly hurting other guns or wing parts

I think it's a good idea and would add another dimension to the normal chain of events. Burning fuel tanks aside, I think an engine fire should be extinguishable in an extreme dive if that worked for real. Although it's not modelled, the assumption could be made that the crew already shut off the fuel supply, killed the electrics and activated any extinguishing equipment fitted.
