New System.
« on: March 11, 2011, 06:38:09 PM »
Trying to put together a proposal for my wife that's as far under $1,000 as can be, but is also upgradeable.  I want a machine that I can drop another set of RAM in later, upgrade the HD later, upgrade the soundcard later, and then upgrade the Video card much farther down the line.  Here's what I have (if you have suggestions please tell me why, not just a new product.  ALSO AS IMPORTANT, cost saving suggestions would be excellent as well.)

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard $118.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor $159.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727

EVGA FPB (Free Performance Boost) 768-P3-1360-TR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 768MB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card $169.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130562

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) $84.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231311

I'm also needing to find a proper power supply wattage.  Probably going with a cheaper case, as I don't have any desire to spend a ton of money on a fancy one.

*ahem*...just a little note to consider...amd=ati...if you went with an ati video card you could save some money, get a full gig of graphics memory, have better hardware compatibility and not have to worry about how much power the +12v leg of the power supply is putting out...

that nvidia 460 requires a power supply with minimum +12v rating of 24 amps...

No problem what so ever.  That would run it perfectly.

With that system Speak, you could have all the eye candy turned on, just be careful when selecting how much smooth shadow you apply (I'm running dual 5770 in crossfire, and using 2048mb).

Other than that, your good to go.

Ten60,
as Gyrene posted...if you really want to stay with AMD for the CPU but want to go for a Nvidia graphic card, make sure you get the correct MB with the nvidia ( or nforce ) chipsets for the north bridge and south bridge for better compatibility.....

the MB you chose is more compatible with an Ati graphic card verses that Nvidia graphics card you listed

I would also recommnd a good quality PSU ( Power supply Unit ) with a 60amp single 12V rail, instead of a PSU with 2 or 3(or 4 ) lower 12V rails on it that only have like 14amp/18amp/20/amp etc ratings.......

as for the cheap case....when looking for a good cheap case ( that you will not have to modify later )

some things to look for are:
- PSU mounted in the bottom
-plenty of openings to add case fans 90mm/120mm/140mm/200mm fan sizes

the bad thing about most prebuilt computers is the case design... they come with hardly any air vents to get proper air exchange ( get the cool air in / hot air out )

like Dell, HP, SystemMax, Acer, etc......

don't go to cheap on the case....or all those more costly components could become damged due to excessive heat build up

hope this helps

I think  it's inconsiderate to ask for help on someone's request for help thread.  It isn't that hard to start your own thread and frankly it's quite rude.

As for the ATI card, Thanks for the suggestion I will go with it.  (Cheaper too lol)

TY to all for the help.  Should make a difference!
