P51B
« on: March 14, 2011, 07:58:40 PM »
In Aces High what are the tech specs of the P51B?

Does our AH version run an Allison, Packard or Rolls Royce engine for example?

Is it also better or not than a Rolls R' Merlin powered Mustang III?

If memory serves the Mustang III IS a P-51B (I think the RAF retro fitted most of the 51B's they received with the Malcomb style hood).  In which case it would have used a Rolls Royce Merlin engine, which was licensed and built by Packard.  The only difference between the B and C P-51's were the factory in which they were built. The B and D model 51's both used Merlin engines although I think they were geared a little different which explains the different climb rate and speed curves.

Going mostly from memory so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Soulyss, you are  correct.  Our 51B has the same Packard Merlin V1650 as the 51D.  The malcom was added for better visablity vs the birdcage, and to my knowledge malcoms were not factory added option.  So that makes the B the only field modded aircraft in AH.

Alot of people I've flown with over the years have said that in AHII the Pony B was modeled with an Allison engine. Which is what I always assumed, because it explained the major differences between it's own performance and that of the Pony D, (and that I had read that it was an Allison somewhere). But Yarbles was adamant its a Packard Merlin in the AH version. Hopeing to have that cleared up

Mustang III had 4x20mm Hispanos,  I wish we had that option <G>

Actually, the RAF Mustang Mk III is the same as US P-51B/C.  The Mustang IA had for 20mm and production on those were rather small.  Also the Mustang IA had the Allison V-1710 (About 1150hp).

I should say the Mustang III had the packard merlin 1650-3 and the Mustang IV had the packard merlin 1650-7.  A difference in SC gearing and about 70hp.  But also consider the less ammo and weight of two .50s on the III.

P-51B was the first Mustang with the Merlin.

The last P-51 with the Allison engine was the P-51A/Mustang II.

The obvious visual distinguishing differences are, The A has a bladed propeller vs. the B's four bladed propeller.

The A has a carburator scoop above the nose. The B's is in the chin.

A P-51C is a P-51B built in Dallas, TX. P-51Bs were built in Inglewood, CA.

A P-51K is a P-51D built in Dallas.

P51B in game uses the Rolls Royce Merlin 61 (same as the Packard Merlin V-1650-3 ) while the P51D uses the 66 (which is the Packard Merlin V-1650-7). I can find information that the V-1650-7 was 1,490 HP/1,720 HP but no information on the P51B's V-1650-3's HP.
I also believe that the P51D was slightly lighter an airframe to make up for the extra 2 .50 cals correct?

Malcolm hood is a newer addition to the P51B in game. it used to have the birdcage. never knew why they replaced it with the Malcolm? most likely for the better view.

Backing up statements that the Mustang MK III is the P51B/C and the Mustang MK IV is the P51D/K. Dolby, like they said, the only Allison Mustangs were the A model/MK II ones. A nice plane but no where near what the mustangs in game are like :t

Pulled America's Hundred Thousand off the shelf and there while both the B/C and D models used the Packard Merlin V-1650 it looks like they did make a bit of a change somewhere in the B/C production run.  The early B/C models had the V-1650-3 while later models and the D series had the V-1650-7 which had slightly different power outputs at different alts due to different supercharger settings which explains the different speed curves.

D'oh didn't see your post... but to answer you're question about the V-1650-3's power output according to Dean it's..

Take off/sea level: 1380hp
Combat/15600ft:  1600hp
Combat/29000ft:  1330hp
Military/13750ft:  1490hp
Military/25800ft:  1210hp

It does seem that the weight of the D is a little higher than the B/C model.
Quote
Empty eight of the D model increased about 200 pounds as did basic weight.  One source of the increase was in corporation of the six instead of four .50 caliber machine guns.

*edit*
oh and the Malcomb hood...
Quote
Of the 1988 P-51B aircraft went to the RAF.  most all were revised to use the Malcomb hood type of canopy for better visibility in that service, as were some retained in the USAAF.

Bud Anderson talks about it a bit in his book too.
Quote
It was rounded, slid fore and aft on rails, and gave the pilot a little more headroom and visibility. Now, you could lean to the side and see your exhaust stacks out front, and your vertical fin to the rear, which you couldn't before.

then the site i found the V-1650-7's HP rating was incorrect possibly
