What Squadron holds the highest 1 day kill total?  What were they flying and what did they shoot down?  Where did it happen and what was the date?

I will post the answer that I have when I get home at 7:00PM PST.  I'm curious to see if anybody has info that contradicts mine.

I always see many kills marked for JG2.

I know when alot of the Pigs are up, they take quite a toll.

I think Karnak is talking about the real world.

I would guess either one of the JG's during early Operation Barbarossa, or one of the CV squadrons in the late Pacific war shooting down Kamikazes.

My guess would be one of the squadrons operating in the "Marianas Turkey Shoot", probably flying F6Fs, but thats a total guess

For some reason JG52 comes to mind, but I don't have resource material in front of me to find out.   That would mean 109's, and most likely against outdated Russian birds. I would assume it would have been during the push against Moscow, rather then the opening of Barbarossa (for instance).

I think the record for the Pigs for kills in a single sortie is 38 Kills.  Smut parked his panzer at a spawn point one night a couple of weeks ago. <G>

Not a squadron, but a group.  The following is from Clarence "Bud" Anderson's page ( http://www.cebudanderson.com/  )

"Many incidents stand out, but we will only mention a few. The 357th put the first allied fighters over Berlin on the 4th of March 1944
(along with one squadron of thee 4th Group). In August, the Group escorted a fleet of B-17s to Russia, Italy and back home on one of
the shuttle missions. During the airborne landing at Arnhem in September, the 357th destroyed 50 enemy aircraft in two days. The 14th
of January 1945 brought what will always be "THE BIG DAY". During a massive air battle in the Berlin area, 357th Group pilots shot
down 551/2 German fighters. No other fighter group has even come close to this score."

As it turns out, Bud Anderson and Chuck Yeager missed that mission that day.  They were scheduled as backup pilots and weren't needed, so they took a joyride over France, instead.

Is this the answer you were looking for?

OK chaps, heres the info I have.

It is from "The Battle of Britain" by Richard Townshend Bickers and puplished by Salamander Books in 1990.

The fourth, fifth and sixth paragraphs of page 24 read as follows:

Quote

Unsung Heroes
It is fitting at this point to pay tribute to the least known fighter pilots and their air gunners who took a massive toll of the enemy over a period of a few weeks during the spring of 1940:  the air crews of 264 Squadron, who flew two-seater Defiant fighters, that are always eclipsed by the Hurricanes and Spitfires.  The first Defiant Squadron, No 264 commanded by Sqn Ldr Philip Hunter, a greatly liked and admired leader, had made a discouraging début on May 12 on a patrol near The Hague.  A Ju 88 was seen over the sea, bombing two British ships.  Hunter and two others went after it and Hunter's air gunner, Leading Aircraftman F.H. King, shot it down.  On May 20, 264 Squadron shot down 17 Bf 109s without loss and 11 Ju 87s and 88s, which established an unbroken record for the number of aircraft destroyed by any squadron in one day.
The reason for this success, it appears, was that the enemy mistook the Defiant for a Hurricane.  Bf 109 pilots thought they could attack it from astern with impunity but were disabused when the four guns in its rotating turret, blasted them to oblivion.  Bomber crews were unperturbed when a Defiant flew in front of them for the same reason and were equally astonished to find themselves under fire.  The ideal attack by a Defiant was to cross ahead of its target at 90 degrees so that the air gunner could swing his guns to point over the beam.  The guns could not point forward, so a Defiant was defenceless against a head-on attack.
On May 27 over Dunkirk 264 Squadron met Bf 109s for the first time.  Seeing eight of these, Hunter ordered the Squadron to form a line astern.  LAC King sent a 109 down in flames.  Two other Defiants shared another 109 destroyed.  The Squadron landed, refueled and returned to the Dunkirk area.  This time they saw 12 He 111s of which they bagged three.  By May 31 the squadron's total victories stood at 65.

I note that there is an inconsistancy in that the paragraphs claim that 264 Squadron shot down 17 Bf 109s on the 20th and then that they met Bf 109s for the first time on the 27th.  This is almost certainly a misprint on the part of the author/editor and one of the references should be Bf 110s.
Shortly after this time, the Germans snapped to what a Defiant was and began to shoot it down in droves until the British withdrew it from daylight service.  The Boulton Paul Defiant did go on to serve as a very good early war nightfighter, but its few days of glory were gone.
This does exemplify the statement that every dog has his day.  I also think that it took some b**ls to go up against 109s in Defiants.

Hmm, I still think that Luftwaffe JG holds the record altought I cannot give 100% sure numbers.

For example, Marseille from JG 27 alone destroyed 17 allied planes during one day in Afrika front. August Lambert from SG 1 (or 2) alone destroyed 18 soviet planes during one day in eastern front.

If their gruppe (might be to big unit for comaprison) or staffel had scored atleast as many as those man alone, I think they will quite high on the list for most kills per day by certain sized unit.

JG 26 scored another 9 kills on the day Marseille got his 17. 26 kills total, but the DAF only lost 20 planes.
