Then again wow am I slow on the up take. I was going out to lunch with my Son this week. He wanted to buy me lunch for having forgotten about a dinner I made for him and his wife (Another story). I was bustling around, cleaning the house, picking up stuff, clearing out the jeep, and baking cookies. I'm on a diet and the only way I can justify eating cookies is if I have company
. So I dash to the computer room to make sure it is presentable. I see the below poster:
The background to the poster is I was given a key by my controller to a safe with almost nothing in it. This happened out of the blue about 7 years ago. I thought that was strange but then I was honored to be trusted. I was to keep it locked in my drawer. Because the Controller said she would need access to it I had to leave my desk drawer key on the premises. So I hid the drawer key and told her where it was at. The safe itself was in a locked room. Then later moved to a room that was open to all. Then about 1 to 2 weeks later I came in and found the above laminated poster. Apparently I forgot to lock my drawer. The controller and I were the only ones who should have known about the key but the poster was made by a financial analyst who I thought was my friend and golfing buddy. Later as I got to know him he turned out to be one of the most underhanded people I had ever worked with, so trite, so petty, and so transparent I wondered why doesn't anyone else see this. He had also worked with the Controller for 8 years prior to them coming to the company I worked at. Continuing, I couldn't find the key to the drawer. It was gone. I wanted to make some accusations at the time but was not comfortable with that. Heck maybe I forgot to lock the drawer. It was embarrassing. How could I be so lax in my duties!? I received a mild lecture from the controller. I kept the poster as a reminder to be diligent in my responsibilities.
Back to Monday and lunch with my son, I was running around frantically trying to get everything ready and scanning the computer room. When I looked at the poster I thought wow is that detailed. A very well thought out message and then the cut out letters. I thought that must have taken some time to cut out all those letters so perfectly, especially the smaller ones. It was copied and then laminated. The message itself must have taken some time to work out as well. All done after I left work at 5:30 pm. Then the lights went on, the bells rung, ding ding, click, lights on. I was set up! There must have been collusion between the Controller and the Sr. Financial Analyst. So why bring it up now. Like I said, I just figured it out. Wow am I slow!
Do I feel bad about it, nope. Will I be more cautious in the future, yes.
I through the poster away on Monday afternoon but on Tuesday I pulled it back out not as reminder to be diligent but as a reminder of how underhanded people can be.
