I agree with the Tippmann advice for your first marker.  Get a newer Tippmann model that's designed to work on compressed air, not the old models the fogeys around this BBS speak of.  Yes those old models still work, but if the paintball places around you are anything like the ones around me, they often don't have CO2 fills ready, which will leave you having to run air on a marker designed for CO2.  Which can be problematic unless you can find a very high pressure regulator for your air tank to simulate CO2 pressures.

If you decide you still like Paintball after a year or so, don't be afraid to upgrade from your Tippmann to something more advanced to be competitive and be accepted on a team.  Tippmanns are a woodsball / casual marker (in general), you'll want something else if you play a lot or play competitively.  But that will cost you more money, both in the marker itself and on paint, because the faster you can shoot, the more you do shoot.  Even so, keep the Tippmann, don't sell it if/when you upgrade, it will work when your other markers break down.

If you happen to live out west, I understand there's a lot more interest out there in pump-class paintball.  Pump for me is a lot more fun (when everyone is playing pump), because of the limited rate of fire you can do crazier moves, and oh yeah, you shoot less paint so it costs less.  I have two CCI Phantom pump markers, one for me and one to lend so that I can maybe get someone else hooked on pump and start something here in the midwest.  But in general people here just want to throw paint around.

My semi-auto is a very customized Autococker that I spent well north of 1K on (bought 8-9 years ago), that I never use because I don't want to break it and its too hard to keep tuned.  Paintball markers are funny, when you're playing you curse yourself for not spending more (unless you're kicking bellybutton all day), when you're not playing you curse yourself for spending too much.

And oh yeah another good place for more paintball info is http://www.pbreview.com .

I used to be a hardcore paintballer for nearly 15 yrs.  I played from the mid 90's through 2006.  Ended up on a collegiate club team, doing tournaments all over the mtn west and NW states.  I started out in the woods, but quickly got into speedball and never went back into the woods.  I find the fast pace and short games of speedball more appealing then the long games and sneaking/stalking in scenarios and woodsball.  Different strokes, I'd try both styles and see which you prefer.  And there is no rule that says you can't do both.  On my college team there where a couple of guys who also played scenarios too, they had a setup for each style.

As fir paintball gear; it is like many things, ask 10 people and you'll get 11 opinions.

Bottom line is this, gear does not make you a good player, BUT you do need gear that can play to your potential.

If your planning on playing only woodsball or scenarios with your buddies for fun, then a $200 Tippman will probably suit you fine.  If you ever want to get into real competition you will want something much better.  At the very least something with compressed air, break-beam eyes and a forced loader.

FWIW over the years I have owned and used (in chronological order) a Phantom pump, a Spyder (back in '95 I think when they only made one model) a Bob Long Millenium series Autococker (w/ purple splash anodizing  :rock ), a MiniMag, a SP Ion ( hated it), an ICD Bushmaster,  and finally an ICD Freestyle ( green dust finish  :rock )  I'd say they where all good markers in their time, except for the Ion.

My biggest paintball tip is this "DON'T BE AN #$@HOLE!!!" the thing that ticked me off more then anything when I played was the punk kids who would go vandalize with paintballs (somebody hit a bunch of cars in my neighborhood once), or play where they are not welcome, or make themselves not welcome where they used to be, by being disrespectful jerks and shooting some ranchers cattle (saw it happen), or leaving trash everywhere.   It seems like paintball for some reason attracts a lot of idiotic losers, who only serve to give the sport a bad rep among those who don't understand it.

Also why I don't like PBNation at all.  Last time I was there it seemed to be completely populated by pre-pubescent idiots who think they know everything, and find elementary school anatomy jokes hilarious.  I used the buy/sell forum on occasion, put really couldn't stand the place.

Get a tippman 98 custom..be happy with it and never change markers.

I've played ALOT I have a gun thats shoots 25 balls per second, but guess what, if the weather isnt perfect the balls swell and shrink.. if its not perfect i have a 700$ blender.

If you have a $700 marker that behaves that badly just because of a temp or humidity change, then it's either broken, or your not tuning it right.

I played with my Bushmaster, and Freestyle (probably had $700 and $1200 into them respectively) in everything from spring blizzards with 8" of snow in Montana, to 105° heat in St. George.  With nothing more then a few tweaks to the regulators and making sure my barrel was big enough for the paint (I usually used a .693 bore 2 piece barrel no matter what paint, to big is better then to small) they performed equally well at either extreme.

Every $700 marker made in the last 10 years has had break-beam eyes AFAIK, and with eyes and a forced hopper it's pretty hard to chop paint unless your regulator or barrel is seriously messed up.

The only Tippmans I've ever used where rentals, and I was not impressed.  They seemed to have terrible pressure spikes, horrible accuracy, a 50lb trigger pull, and chopped paint a lot.  Of course I don't blame this all on Tippman, rental markers are probably all trashed, and that was like 17 yrs ago too.

I played ALOT of paintball in the 80's-90's in Connecticut. Some of the best games I ever played in were the Combat Classics at West Point,New York.We were invited to join the Cadets from the Army and Air Force along with the Midshipman from Annapolis's teams. There were 100+ players per team and games were played on the training grounds. The sight and sound of all those paintball guns firing was awesome.Almost all players had pump guns but some newer semi-autos were used.I had a Line SI Bushmaster pointman pump action with a custom barrel that was super accurate.I still have the gun and would love to break it out some time.Great memories and tons of fun to be had playing Paintball if you find the right people to play with.   :aok :salute

man the memories of Paintball, I used to play alot of pick up games in the local woods with buddies then we played alot at fields for the scenarios. My set up used to be the tippman 98 with 14" sniper barrel and a shortie as back up, had all the bells and whistles on it but the best time to play was winter in the snow we used to get evil and freeze the paintballs the night before and just wail the heck out of each other in the woods. I used to wear the camo but I found that black works alot better cause on a nice sunny day you blend in alot better in my opinion. Well good luck and have fun it can get addicting to play and cost ya some money also

If you live anywhere near Pennsylvania, check out EMR's Castle Conquest event. One of the largest scenarios battles I have ever taken part in. Takes place twice a year in the spring and fall. I try to go every year, and helped attackers take the castle in record time 2 years ago  :D

WOW that's alot of good advice guys. Thanks for the help.Yea I'm looking at the Tippmann 98 custom because i really liked liked the woods and castle scenarios and I know I'll be doing alot of that. Some of the more legit players kept telling me to stay away from spyders as much as possible soo I'll just take their word for it and leave it at that.I don't plan on becoming hard core.Just plan on playing maybe every month or two with a group of friends at orbital paintball over here in Tampa. But i'm seeing on this tippmann that it doesn't have the double tripper should i maybe get a marker that does? does it really matter?

Best advice I can give you is stick to the woods and scenario games. There is far more sportsmanship and fun playing with these types of games than the tourneys.

Tourneys attract ALOT of prettythangholes that think they are the best and always bend the rules. Even when the refs are around.

I have an evil omen 2.0 the reason the balls need to be right is because it uses cam arms not eyes.

Waste of money my tippmann 98 with the E trigger was a much bette gun.

The best Time I had was playing in the moonlight with 30 people..it ended up being more about drinking copious amounts of beer than paintball but fun nonetheless.

Latrobe, are you aware that one of the best Pro teams in history is based in Latrobe, as well as their paintball company "Smart Parts"?  When I was a kid I played pro in the NPPL (we were the only Canadian team to place consistently and won 2nd in the 5 man worlds and 3rd in the 10 man Worlds).  Anyhow, the All Americans were one of the best pro teams, from Latrobe Penns, and one of my teamates Roddy Mcdonald went on to manage their team for a long while, and is still involved with Smart Parts I think.  Hard to believe it was 17 years ago.....my team (Personal Vendetta, Canada),which was sponsored by W'Orr Game, Bob Long, Smart parts, RP Scherer, and JT Usa,  got 2nd at the World Amateur Open in 1994, it still remains one of the biggest events ever held in pro/am paintball, with over 500 5 man teams competing....paintball was HUGE during its growth spurt.  I can remember there being over 100 5 man teams at events in Alberta back in the early 90's.

That picture of the Bushmaster Pump brings back a lot of memories too, the owner of that company started a team called "Navarone" that was king of everything in terms of competitive paintball back in the very early 90's until the semi-autos like the VM68 and early Tippman guns came out.  Again, it seems like yesterday, but it's now 20 years since I started playing too, and13 since I stopped working and playing in the industry for a living.  Crazy.

Now, I realize this  might sound quite stupid, but...not so much the skills of paintball, but more the "reaction" time you get from incoming fire and being able to jerk your body from the waist up while on your knees/behind cover/fighting at a corner has served me quite well in my career post paintball.  I've worked for a Private Military Company for the last 7 years until getting sidelined from getting System Lupus, and again, as silly as it sounds, the reflexes developed from the thousands of days I spent playing paintball helped my skills develop quickly while working first as a pistol instructor for SigArms Academy, then for Globe Risk and Tundra security as well (The documentary "Shadow Company" was based largely on me and my company during one of our training cycles and subsequent deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan in the business).  Again, it's been my experience that paintball shooting and real shooting have dramatic differences, but the "reaction time/quick reflex" developed by playing PB can translate to a lot of other things, in particular combat shooting/staying alive-using cover.

I know there is another active AH player here on the HTC forums who playing in the NPPL way back when I just can't find it in the search engine right now.  Pretty sure he was from one of the legendary Florida teams, hah.

edit:  Even though I played competitively I still LOVED big games, and back when I worked in the PB biz, we were the national distributors for RP Scherer Paintballs, and we convinced them to make a short run of neon glow in the dark balls back in the early 90's.  We took these to a night game at Sat Cong Village in California where 600 plus players came out for a night game.  It was the most insane thing I think I've ever seen still to this day, as the semi autos like the AutoMag and Auto Cocker were newly out, and the thousands of balls flying at night glowing like lasers made the whole area look like Star Wars writ large.  The military and police got dozens of calls that night from people nearby wondering WTF was happening.  Good times.

When I was playing I used the Tippman98custom with 14" Dye barrel. Also used a harness and cable. Tried some speedball, but playing against guys with Shockers, or other moneymarkers wasn't my thing. Best game I ever played was in the woods at night and snowing. LOL frozen paintballs hurt.
