Wow....
« on: March 27, 2011, 06:46:12 PM »
So I left my TV turned to Discovery after Mythbusters ended tonight, and caught part of that show Sons of Guns.

A cop came in to their store with an original-configuration Browning M1919 and asked to have it modified into a shoulder-fired weapon. Why? He wasn't allowed to use it in a shooting competition because it doesn't meet the contest's mobility rules and wanted to use it to beat his buddies.

INCREDIBLY sad to see that weapon chopped up for something so petty.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

You must be kidding...absolutely pitiful. I'd liken the loss of this piece of history to Egyptian mummies being ground in to cosmetic powders in Asia.

m1919 is still used around the world.

It's not a rare weapon. You just don't see them here in US because we use M249's and M60's.

They were used as "firewood" as well, if I recall correctly...

As good as the show is...I lost some respect for it. very saddening to hear these stories. To me, the 1919's will always be a piece of history, irregardless if they're still in use around the world.

idk about that, but the fact remains. easily replicated, or still widely used, I feel its historical value has been diminshed.

Never heard of that.  I am skeptical.

This, however, is true.  There were cases of them being taken to Europe to be used as combustibles.

Arab physicians began to prescribe their patients a most unorthodox remedy: the ground remains of mummies procured from Egyptian tombs. [...] Mummy powder proved so profitable that soon after its introduction, Egyptian tombs were ransacked not only for the riches they might contain, but also for bodies that might be processed into the expensive folk medicine.

That's a re-run episode and when it originally aired, it ticked me off.

In the end, they still had an issue with it, not to mention they kept messing up the ROF on it when they were "modifying" it.
