Military Aircraft colors site?
« on: March 27, 2011, 09:17:52 PM »
does anyone know of a database (so to speak) that would have paint schemes of military that the aircraft flew in?

Our T-28 is nearing the paint process (within the next year or so) and i had asked if we have a scheme picked for it yet, and we dont. I had said that i liked the Navy white/orange or Navy grey schemes and he said to bring in pics of them so they could be looked at. I was just searching for pics online but i dont want to copy another plane. I also want it to have all the markings it carried when it was in use. I believe its navy scheme was the orange nose with white body however because i stripped part of gear bay and the bottom layer of paint was orange. The scheme we got it in was a bright yellow/white/red scheme that it wore while being used in Alaska spotting forest fires. http://www.warbirdregistry.org/t28registry/t28-138311.html#thumb

one of our members actually flew our the plane while he was in training way back when, but im not sure what squad he was in. However even looking at the orange/white scheme online, it seems every plane has a different variation of the scheme on it.

im hoping for a site sort of along the lines of the site that we got our little tags from for the last scenario. If it could show the time frame of each scheme of when it was used that would be great.

Any help would be great!

edit: added link to see the pic of her before being stripped

also it looks like its military number could have been 38311. i just looked at pics of the cockpit to find its N-number that we got it as and also saw a "radio call" plackard saying 38311 in the rear cockpit. Also back there was a sticker that had its N number written in below another number. I cant read what the sticker is saying but 101-X-1286x(x) is written in. the x(x) is there because it looks like there might be one possibly two additional numbers but the sticker was peeled/worn away.

ok so ive done a little more research into our aircraft.

its tail # is still N214SF. i looked it up with the FAA and i got its serial # 138311. i went to another site i got when i searched its reg for the faa site and found out its the 118th a/c off of the 28b line.

i found a site that had BU #'s and it listed our aircraft as (c/n 200-382) http://www.joebaugher.com/navy_serials/thirdseries16.html

so now im confused to its real info...

so while continuing to search. I made a massive discovery, not for our T-28 though, but of an aircraft that sat outside our hangar for years until 2009 when it along with its sister plane were sold. We had two L-29's sitting on our ramp for years. I remember them being there until recently and had asked about them like two months ago at the museum to find out what happened to them. I was told they finally were sold or scrapped, cant remember which. Nobody ever thought they would fly again though. So while searching for the T-28 photos i came across photos from all our aircraft and these two L-29's. luckily, the pics for them contained their info. So i decided i would do a quick search of the tail #'s on airliners.net to see if there were any photos. If anything, i expected to see pics of when there were here. Well what came back, shocked me. this is what Czech AF # 33 became.

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Team-Air-Race/Aero-L-29C-Modified/1787936/&sid=874dafc5eedb7e6d9b7817b204ccb7d4

so i was like, no way this is the same aircraft. did some more searching, couldnt find anything. I found their facebook ground and messaged it asking if it was the same, and low and behold, i got a message back 3 minutes later saying, yup its her... Im really shocked.

she was restored to flight and is now flying in the reno air races by a Heather Penney. Heather is a DC Air National Guard pilot and flew F-16's. She was one of four F-16's scrambled on 9-11 after the first crash. She was the second to take off carrying nothing but training rounds in her guns. She now flies gulfstreams for the generals and such. Her dad flies the rare f8f bearcat rare bear in the air races.

The plane was restored in 8 months and placed second in the silver class last year at Reno.

Im currently assigned to the corrosion shop in my squadron. I paint our helos daily. If you need any of the official part numbers and stock numbers for the different colors of paint let me know. I can give them to you and where to get them.

VT-27 T-28s seem pretty popular.

Looks like someone skinned a T-28c from VT-27 for MS Flight Sim 2000:  http://www.simviation.com/fs2000props33.htm   3rd-down page 33.  Try contacting the artist, might be a treasure trove.

ya i saw a pic of that fs plane lol....

i think the arrowhead (or whatever you want to call it) on the tail makes it so much better looking compared to the other orange schemes that have the orange tail but a white rudder.

here is a real T-28C painted in VT-27 colors.

anyone know what the 3G on the tail stands for? ive seen it and a big D on the tail with this scheme.
i wonder if i could find our a/c number online.

3G is the unit identifier. My squadron is AJ. All has to do with the wing and or CAG it is attached to. Being a rag squadron Its probably just wing affiliation.

Not saying you dont know the rest, but Ill fill them in for anyone else.

714 is the a/c number in that squadron. So there is probably atleast 4 more aircraft in that squadron if 714 is the last. Meaning theres a 710, 711, 712, and 713.

VT-27 is the squadron

140477 is the Buno. Thats aircraft specific.

T-28C is obviously the aircraft model.
