couple questions on the TE
« on: March 30, 2011, 04:57:48 PM »
well I finally downloaded the TE, figure its about time I put back into the community......

1- does the TE folder need to be in the AH folder?

2-when I "create map" for a cbm, it only gives me a tiny square of land, but it is the whole map :headscratch:  i put a couple air fields on the terrain and they are showing up on the map, but the map it self is just square.....

3- I am getting a lot of TE crashes...pretty much every time I use it, it will work and what not, but eventually it crashes :headscratch:  every time....like every friggin time :furious   any one know why? or how to avoid this? I really want to get into making terrains and offline missions, but it seems the TE is mad buggy or most likely I am just not running it right.

4-any words of wisdom?

thanx for any help

oh ya... :D.....how can I edit the properties of on object once placed on the terrain?

No. I have my TE in a folder separate from the game. Infact you don't need AH installed
to run the terrain editor, you just need the game to test out the terrain once it is
built.

I'm unclear of what you are saying here. Are you saying you painted the whole terrain but only a small piece in the center is showing up? Or is it something else?

3- I am getting a lot of TE crashes...pretty much every time I use it, it will work and what not, but eventually it crashes headscratch  every time....like every friggin time FURIOUS!   any one know why? or how to avoid this? Well this could be a number of things. I personally believe that the terrain editor
needs a lot more resources to run than the game does, and probably a little more on
the min. system specs. than the game does. But that's just my opinion.
When is the TE crashing, what where you doing at the time of the crash? What did you do right at the moment of the crash?

oh ya... Big Grin.....how can I edit the properties of on object once placed on the terrain?

Select the objects tab then find the object in your terrain and draw a box around it with your mouse, this should hi light it in the list in the objects tab. Double click on it and it will bring up the object properties window and then you can make any changes you need to.

on the second question about the "cbm" it does not show the map shape, or it its messed up, it shows the airfields but the land itself is a square or weird shaped :headscratch:

as far as crashing, today I was "building"  so I could test it out off line, it crashed then, but still created the res file.

thanx for info on changing the properties  :aok

Post a screen shot of what the terrain looks like in the TE editor window, and one of the CBM after you create it.
It could be that you have more texture drawn under the water than what you are seeing in the editor window. I have seen this be the case before.

If the TE crashes on you when you do the built I wouldn't sweat it, it does that to me some times as well and I have a pretty high end machine.

I have noticed that it is more prone to crash at that time tho if I have been doing a lot of work in Photoshop and then working with the TE.
But like I said I wouldn't sweat it none if it still builds the .res file.

Make sure you first select the correct map size to match the terrain size you're building.
Any non "deep water" texture will show as "land" in the CBM that gets generated (even if that terrain is painted over with water).

That CBM is showing a 512x512 mi. terrain.  If you want to build a smaller one, in the TE, select Settings->map size and choose between a 64x64, 128x128, or 256x256 terrain size.  You will not lose the work you have already done.  Remember to save after changing the terrain size.

True, dat.  I found that I can create a good looking island approx. 10x6 miles, with nicely textured rock hills, forests, farms, etc., put an airbase and town on it and call it done in less time than it initially took me to read and practice midi's excellent tutorials...and I've only been playing with the TE for a couple of months.

And on your CBM pic, all that gray is the default "deep water" texture where you have not drawn any "land" textures.

hell I through a quick "dirty" map together and was flying on it, in the shape of a skull, but then going in and changin the ALT, adding new fields, and then I read what is required for a MA map.....ya it'll be awhile before I submit mine  :lol

ok here is what I did today...and this is my CBM...

whats up with the red square in the CBM?  this represents the window on on left?

the grid lines in the large window on left...they don't represent the grid lines on the map?

something is not clicking for me :cry

The red square represents the area you are viewing in the editor at the time.
