Wild Kingdom, poor Jim would jump on the back of a charging Rhino or lasso a grizz.  Then there was the world wide sports on Saturday.  They always showed that skier during the  intro out of control on the ski jump. and then Disney movie on Sunday night.

:rofl  :lol  ah a "point brat"...  :lol  my old man was a combat engineer...hated shining his boots and i hated using that hard kiwi boot polish until i figured out some tricks with it.

those lessons served me well when i went to boot camp though...very few could make their boots glow without the polish cracking...  :D

Yup kiwi only, nothing else. He wouldn't let me shine his shoes ... No one could do it like him, if ya know what I mean. On the other hand, he would not shine mine, that was my job and they had better look good.

I played a lot of hockey back in the day, and he showed me how I could polish up the toe on the boot so you could almost comb your hair in the reflection. Shiny toes were "in" back then.

Fireworks

Real fireworks, at 12 I could get m80's, cherry bombs and black cats by the hundreds.  Worst trouble I ever got in was I had a habit of throwing lit cherry bombs high to get air bursts.  Had one that had a slow fuse, had thrown too near the road and it went off just head high from a motorcycle cop driving by. Ended up in the police station for hours with the red faced cop screaming at me. Don't even want to think about getting home in the back seat of a cop car getting let out, uncuffing me in front of parents and neighbors.

I remember sitting in School during Geography.  All of a sudden over the PA system a radio blares.  At first we didn't know what was going on.
In a few short seconds we did.  President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas Texas and was otw to the Hospital.  Later we learned he died.

Rocky and Bullwinkle and the hunt for the Kerwood derby. (was a play on Derwood Kirby who was Gary Moores' sidekick)  old radio and TV show.
Cuban Missle Crisis.  Being young we had no idea.  We had to ask and then we were afraid, very afraid.
Duck and cover!  We actually hid under kindling in case of a Nuclear attack.  Had those drills once a month in School.
All radio dials had a triangle marked on them in two places.  They were Konelrad Stations (spelling)  to be tuned to in case of Nuclear attack.

Walt Disney Show......Davey Crockett and Coonskin caps.  Lots of kids had them.
Lucy and Desi Arnaz, The Danny Thomas Show, The Peoples Choice, The Life of Riley,& Topper, all hit shows.

1950 era Cars...beautiful!  Chrome all over the place and HUGE.  Every year car designs changed. Unlike now where they are mostly clones year after year.
1958...the first NFL Title game broadcast on TV live.  NY Giants against the Baltimore Colts.  Great game and put the NFL on the map.

It's real funny that I think back about the conversations my dad had with me when I was a kid.  Being told "Just wait.  You'll see."  My dad is a very wise man.

Great post.  You sound like my dad.   :D

And he did walk to school....in a snow storm without shoes, uphill....both ways too!

I wasn't the remote control but rather the "antenna turner". We had a crappy old set of vise grips rusted to the antenna pole. I would go outside and turn the antenna until the picture got better and then my dad would bang on the wall for me to stop. That was fun in the middle of winter when trying to get NY Ranger games out of NYC. I would much rather have been the tv controller on those days.

Same here.  Visiting grandparents in Northeast Mississippi the antenna rotor was ME.  They'd sent me outside (in the dark mostly) and hollar through a window to turn the antenna from the Tupelo station to the Memphis station.  When my uncle hollared "THAT's IT!" I was done....until they wanted it changed again after that show was over.

When I grew up, my country had one radio channel and one tv channel, both run by the state.
The radio channel had almost no pop music at all, - about 2 hours a week or so.
The TV started in 1967, was black & white untill 1975 (my parents got a colour tv in 1982), and, - hold yer breath, - there was no tv on thursdays, and also not in July. The program was usually between 18:00 and 22:00, but there was a movie on Friday and Saturday night. Normally the movies were decades old, so I grew up with favourites like Bogart and John Mills.
So, to evilly continue these glory-days, my daughters hardly get to see any TV at all. We sometimes turn on the set for a firetest.

It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)
