I actually had a doctor's prescription to drink a beer a day when I was a kid, due to being way underweight.  Anyone who looks at me now can tell the cure worked really well :)
In my family my parent's attitude was basically "You know where the liquor is if you want to get stupid" in that it was never presented to me as being part of "being a man" to drink.  I drank socially in the USAF, but never did develop a taste for it.  I might drink a very small amount once or twice a year.

I believe that depends on the state you live in.  Regardless of the law, I believe it's better for the parent to expose the alcohol in a safe way so the temptation to party it up in High School and College is reduced.

When I was a senior in high school my town enacted an ordinance which tried to cut down on teen drinking by enforcing an automatic fine on the drinker and substantial fines on the owner of the property they were drinking on.

That year's party after Jr. Prom was held at a parent's house.  The parents were home because they wanted to supervise, and they insisted that anyone who wanted to drink would have to sleep over.  We all had to put our keys in a basket.

The police raided the house, found the key basket, and traded citations for keys.  They ended up handing out over 100.  The parents, who had the fortitude to attempt to house and supervise 100+ drunken high schoolers received massive fines and criminal charges.

Now you might be saying, "well, the law's the law.  They got what was coming to them."  I can't really argue that.  What I can do is point out the consequences:

1. Teens continued to drink (as they will always do);
2. Parents refused to supervise any more of this drinking;
3. Teens refused to put keys in a basket.

So, the results of the ordinance were completely unsupervised teen drinking and increased drunk driving....  Kinda a phyrric victory for the cops and town council if you ask me...

thus the reason it's been available to Squid for some time now.  He's tried it, there's no mystery, and he has no desire to drink again at this time.  *shrug* that may change but when I was his age... I'll leave the rest to your imaginations.

Always been a fan of rum and beer, then my folks turned me onto Sake when I was 15. Can't stand grape wine but sake is a different story.

Vodka and grapefruit juice or Vodka and pink lemonade is about all I drink when it comes to vodka (sometimes straight--Grey Goose, Pinnacle, or Skol)

I hate beer, but if I have to choose I'll take Michelob Ultra.

My favorite drink is jager.  I'll drink it straight or mixed (but not with red bull...I HATE jager bombs)

Don't drink, then post or drunk dial. Trust me on this. :)

I remember in Colorado, a parent could buy their children drinks in public.  I was maybe 14?

Red bull has always been too sweet for me even as a mixer. I've gotten used to vodka straight or mixed. Beer...bleh.

:lol schlitz malt liquor at 11...vodka at 13...whiskey and tequila at 15...ah the good ole days.

can't stand gin...once took a big drink of tanqueray thinking it was vodka...wasted a perfectly good steak dinner.

it's too bad parents aren't allowed to actually parent their children responsibly these days...pretty soon we won't be allowed to send our kids outside to play without a legal permit to do so.

Quoted for truth! Gin is horrible stuff.

I am just surprised that anyone could have lasted this long to get drunk first time. That's why I asked his age out of curiosity.
And I don't know much, but I do know this. With a golden heart comes a rebel fist.

ya, that was back in the 60s through mid 70s...used to go with my dad to the nco club at ft. carson and the local vfw...as long as the kid wasn't running rampant and urinating in the plastic plants it was ok...then about what, 76-77(?) they changed the law so you had to be 18 or over to have even 3.2 beer with your parent...would have sucked if i couldn't buy liquor on my own at the store a buddy worked in.    :devil

heh...

I was buying beer at 16 and I KNOW I didn't look 18 then.  Managed to just get by the TX law raising it from 18 to 19 then from 19 to 21.

REALLY glad I'm not as stupid now as I was then.  I'm lucky I'm not dead or in prison.
