SB2C Helldiver

Made by Curtiss, it was the replacement for the SBD Dauntless. it had a top speed of 294 mph and it could carry a 2,000 lbbomb or a MK 13-2 torpedo in its internal bomb bay.  It could carry up to 500 lbs of bombs, or depth charges on each of its 2 wing hard points.

From the web page:

"The first production SB2C-1 flew on 30 June 1942, and SB2Cs first flew into combat in the campaign for Rabaul in November 1943. By the next year the SB2C had replaced the SBD Dauntless as the Navy's first line dive bomber."

And every Navy dive bomber pilot would have gladly traded it in to get their SBDs back.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see her and the TBD added for completeness, but I think people are expecting WAY too much out of the Helldiver.

i expect to see it eventually simply because it belongs  :aok     maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday.    and if it's a POS?   bfd.   not the point.

SB2C... Son of B....., 2nd Class.

That's what they called it. Probably more lethal to naval air crews than the enemy was. Underpowered, unreliable, unsurvivable... If I recall that was just the selection of the most common critiques. It was also terrible to maintain and other bad things.

At least, that's the reputation it has.

The later models fixed most of the problems. Unfortunately, those later models (-4 and -5) missed the War and by then the purpose-built dive bomber was obsolete, anyway.
