Missions Options / Sub-Missions / Mission Status
« on: April 10, 2011, 05:38:09 PM »
Add to my wishlist:

A system where missions can be built in pieces and launched independently.  For example, I want to run a large buff raid vs strats - right now, we create one huge mission that has all the buffs, all the escorts, etc. and we launch all at once.  What I would like to be able to do is build this mission in pieces as part of a larger mission and launch it in pieces.  For example, part 1 might be "Escort Buffs", which launches at some base near the rendezvous with orders to meet buffs in 8,5,kp5 at 20K and escort them to target in 15,7,kp2.  Part 2 might be "Open the Door" which is a Single Mossie launching near the front with orders to drop a radar at a base in 14,6,kp4.  Part 3 might be "Strat Bombing Raid" which is 20 boxes of B-24s launching with orders to meet escorts at 8,5,kp5 at 20K and then proceed to target and bomb the city.  What I would like most is the ability to launch the pieces of the mission from different airfields, and set up pieces of the mission that can be taken and flown while other pieces are still recruiting or preparing to launch.  In the above example, by building it in pieces I could have buffs launch and grab alt towards the rendezvous for 10 minutes or so before I launch the escorts.  The mossie portion of the mission might not launch until the escorts rendezvous with buffs at 20K and they all head to target.

In the "mission options' category - I would like to be able to set various elements.
1.  Which one of the three different parts of the mission I join in as the mission builder - since I can't take them all I'd like to be able to set which portion I do take.
2.  The "launch options" - launch that part of the mission at a specific time, or let whoever takes a portion of the mission 'launch when ready'.
3.  Available until Target Destroyed - in the example of the mossie raid, I would like to have this portion of the mission remain available to be taken and launched as long as the target radar is not destroyed.  In other words, if the first guy that launches in a mossie doesn't make it, I would like him to be able to re-up by taking the same mission again, or someone else might take it while he is still on his way and launch a 2nd mossie to the same target.  Once the target is destroyed, this portion of the mission would become unavailable.

Finally, I would really like a 'mission status' screen.  In flight (say I am with the buffs), I pull up the missions from my clipboard, hit mission status and see a list of who is in each portion of the mission, whether they are still in flight / crashed / bailed / etc.  I would think that this 'mission status' screen should be available to everyone in the mission, so for example the mossie driver can see how many buffs are still in the air after he hits his target.

We do something like this now by having various squads coordinate and set a vox channel, but what I would like to do is be able to extend portions of this mission to players not in a squad, or to newbies that might be looking for something to do.

Flame on, or add ideas of your own.

It'd be a cool add-on, but you can sort of do that with the system in place.

Create multiple missions, starting from different points.

Use vox channels to designate flights (so you can tune to vox XXX and see how many are in the buff mission/fighter mission/Jabo mission).

The trick to large scale, complex missions is to have flight leads that know the plan well and can coodinate between the other flight leads (all know the plan and all vox channels for the flights).

It would be nice to simplify it all into one part of the GUI though.

Posting it as 3 different missions doesn't quite get it.  Yes, you can fudge it by posting 3 missions, having different vox channels, assigning wing leaders, etc.  I'm just looking for some upgraded capabilities to make it easier to run big missions, and to assign portions of missions that can be assigned to a single player, can repeat, be launched independently, etc.

one more thing ... the last thing this game needs right now is more ways to encourage massive missions ...
