Before I ever up 29s I always take up a pony and scout out the terrain around the base im comng out of, and try to figure out a plan.

Just wondering here, as a band-aid type of fix for the map makers is it possible to connect 2 small airfields corner to corner to create a runway that is double the length of the typical runways now? Yes it would be two bases right next to each other but you could still just do a few like this towards the back of a country, similar to the placement of the Me163 bases.

Nope

Depends where I'm going, but I've done plenty of flights over 125 minutes.

Do you throttle down for cruise?

When I fly I'm almost always on cruise power.

When I fly I'm almost always on cruise power.

Generally what I'll try to do is:
1)Climb to alt at full power
2)Level out and stay on cruise for drop
3)Full power for egress out of enemy territory
4)Full or cruise dependent on how much fuel I've got left once over friendly territory

I like having the extra fuel if I'm getting chased by multiple cons.

You do indeed make long flights

Nope

Nope, what?  Nope, its a bad idea? Nope its never been tried before? Nope, the n,o,p, and e keys are the only ones working on my keyboard and I didn't feel like typing the word "open"?

Care to elaborate on your answer dot?

Just emulating Hitech's beautifully to-the-point answers to some questions.  :D

There are strict rules for map makers regarding object placement for MA maps, so having two adjacent to each other is not allowed.

Although not a rule, it is suggested that the map-maker fly out of every base to make sure bombers have at least one runway available without obstacles (like mountains) in the way.  Me, I just make sure there's enough flat (or gently sloping) terrain in at least one direction...I'm too lazy to run a set of bombers down every runway.  :D

I think it'd be cool to have B-29 specific bases, sectors back from the front of course.

Even without the rules about object placement it wouldn't work.  Map tiles cover 1 mile on the map.  So if you did put 2 bases right together they would still have half a mile seperating them.  Think of 2 vbases that are right together.  It would be the same.  Runways would be near each other.

The grid squares are 1 mile square in the Terrain Editor.
This is what you'd get if you laid two bases together to try to make a long runway...not a half-mile between them.
Anyway, it's not allowed so we live with what we have.

(Image removed from quote.)

so that would make the runway about 7,167 ft.

Thanks for elaborating dot and big thanks for the picture. After posting on this tread I went to the terrain editors forum and posted the question in there and got a similar answer about how a rule of thumb is that airbases shouldn't be place any closer together than 3/4 of a sector, and also how you would have double of every important building/structure/town if you did place 2 airbases together.  I also got a different answer from mrmidi on that forum that I will copy/paste below:

"You could place the large runway object next to your airfield and set it's properties to runway.

That would give you just the runway's and taxi ways without all the hangers and tower objects.

The East and West runways should line up perfectly and give you around a 10,000ft runway.

Edit: you will have about a 100ft patch of grass between them but I just tried it in the TE and every thing worked fine.

midi"

Maybe we will see some maps with this in the future if HTC has no intentions to make the current airbase object longer

tmetal,

I believe adding just a runway object by itself would consitute a "custom object" as far as MA standard terrains go; which would also break the rules and would not be allowed.  Terrains for SEA and AvA arenas are given more freedom for customized objects and terrain tiles, so it would be possible for those arenas.

Good to know dot. Maybe one of the HTC crew will post about the possibility of bending or adjusting the map making rules for the MA to accommodate a few b29 long fields being added to a map.  It's not hard to get a b29 out of most airbases with a little planning, it just seems wrong to fly a plane out of an airfield that has a runway too short for it.
