Thinkin bout new Joystick.
« on: April 19, 2011, 04:09:09 PM »
So my X-52 pooped out on me about a year ago (when im using it it will just stop working then jerk the plane side to side) and Want to get a new Joytsick. I loved the X52 except for ONE thing....the tension on it was WAY to loose. Literally if you tap the stick it will go all the way down. Does anyone know of a good joystick that has high tension? I tried things to increase tension on the X52 but seems like nothing helped.

Idk, the first joystick I had a long long time ago when I first started aces high ( like 8 years ago) It was a very tight joystick. But the X-52 seems so loose, which makes it harder to fly with.

Try some CH gear.

The only problem I had with that is then I would have to buy the pedals, cause they dont have the twist on the stick.

I usd a M$ Sidewiner 3D Precision Pro for 12 years.  It finally shelled out on my last August.

My new Logitek Extreme 3D Pro is great.  I woul recommend it especially for the $25 I paid at Best Buy.

X52 Pro has stiffer spring tension than the standard X52. The pro uses a duel spring set up. The CH has lighter tension. I had to go to the gym for six months to move the Thrustmaster Warthog around <G>

There is a simple mod you can do to shim the spring of the x52 to give it a bit more tension without switching to a heavier spring:

Ok so I opened the X52 up again....I jumped on offline AH and this is what happens.

As I start to fly its fine, but when i pull up on the stick sometimes it works and other times nothing will happen, or sometimes it will very very slowly pull up, then a few seconds later the plane jerks up and it works fine. This happens repeatedly during flight.  I have make sure all wires are still connection, nothing is split, i cleaned up the oil/grease that was on the magnets and around it, its still doing it. What could be causing this?  Everything works fine except the Y when i pull up on it.  I also notice the Y axis under controls is moving, the number I mean. And ive calibrated it multiple times.

And I tried the thing for tension on X52, it kinda works but at same time you lose movement.

Plugging my X-52 into a powered USB hub, instead of the USB port on my PC, made all the difference for me.

So I went and re downloaded drivers and noticed something, in the set up program:

The X and Y axis square in top left isnt in the center, but the mouse one in the bottom right is?
Also When i move the stick left to right that little cross goes all the way to right and all the way to left. But when I move it up and down it only goes like 3 cm up and down?

Then when I went to deadzone I noticed that the Y axis is far to the right and all the others are in the center?

And again, when I push the stick to the right or left is goes all the way to the right or left, but not when I move it up or down.

I'd love to find someone that could mod my CH gear to have more tension.. especially the pedals

When I was at CH, I had taken an old set of Pro Pedals and swapped out the main spring (the spring that controls the Yaw tension) and replaced it with a spring from a Force FX (a lot stronger than the springs on the Combat or Fighterstick) and then used the main spring from the Pro Pedals and another one that I cannabilized from another set of Pro Pedals and swapped out the pedal springs with those springs to increase the tension of the pedal movement as well.

The end result?  Very sore ankles after a couple of hours and a loss of accuracy as it was much easier to get precise and accurate movements with the lesser tension springs that are used on the Pro Pedals than the strongers springs from the Force FX I swapped them with.

As for the stick, one of the tricks I used to recommend to customers that called us about increasing the stick spring's tension was to use a rubber band on the stick.  The best rubber bands are the large, thick rubber bands that will allow you to wrap it around the gimble, then wrap under the stick and back around the gimble.  You can use rubber bands of varying size and strength to achieve the amount of tension you want.
