Vehicle controller configuration?
« on: April 27, 2011, 01:48:30 AM »
Has anybody been able to configure any axis to steer the tanks? The steering seems to work from A and S but I couldn't configure rudder to steer the tank.

How does the throttle work in tanks or does it work at all?

Is there a way to switch gears? Or are they replaced by funky accelerate and stop/reverse buttons?

Is there a way to invert mouse Y axis for gun control?

Analog controls will not work for steering and throttle on tanks now, and they all have automatic transmissions. Others have discussed setting up a hat switch for this - I already had one I used for shifting gears, now I guess I'll make it  accelerate and slow down instead.

It would be nice if AH let us use analog controls for more things - I'd love to be able to use a slider to zoom in and out, for example, but I doubt we'll see that anytime soon.

There is a mouse axis inversion option in options-preferences-view options, but I haven't tried it for aiming.

I configured the rudder and it moved the turret, I have assigned hat keys for steering & moving.

You can, I did...  First you have to make sure to calibrate the slider in game (like you do with the joy stick), then set it.  I'm at work, so can't remember the exact setting, but it does work.  The name of the setting makes sense, so just look around.

I set it to one of the wheels on my X52, it seemed to have more fine adjustment than the slider on the throttle.

ON EDIT... Just found the setting in another post, it's gunsight range increase/decrease...

So far, zoom (view magnification) no longer seems to work with gunsights.  So I believe you are mistaken.  "gunsight range increase/decrease" merely adjusts the sight reticle on certain tanks (i.e. German).

In tank gunner positions, there is no longer a continuous zoom, tanks with 2 magnification will change with the zoom toggle key.

I haven't tried it yet, but shouldn't it be possible for X52 owners to use the Saitek software to map steering and accelerate/brake to the joystick?

Yes. You could break the axis into several bands, and assign the WASD keys to them.
However, I would prefer if I could simply map those basic steering controls to my controller inside AH, particularly for those of us with rudder pedals without any external software.

Oh I agree, I dislike the saitek software intensely.  I would much rather be able to do it in game.  I was just pointing out that there are some options beyond all the gnashing of teeth that we are getting right now.

Only for those with a stick like that. If you have a controller without external software (such as my pedals), you are out of luck ;)

Should be not that difficult to allow us to go both ways. After all, wheel brakes for planes can be either mapped to keys & buttons or to an analog axis as well. I'd really like to use my throttle and pedals for forward & backward movement & turning control.

Here's a thought.  The zoom changes lead to more prototypical engagement ranges of course (I can no longer pick off stationary tanks at 5000 yards, which was fun, but arcade-like...).  However, the new lower zoom may put a premium on PC systems which allow maximum screen resolution and those with large monitors.  It may also put a premium on good eyesight.  With my admittedly obsolete system and aging eyes, all tanks are now indistinguishable blobs at 1000m.  I can no longer make up for this with zoom.  This is not a complaint, but merely an observation.

BTW, thanks for the clarification.

I would be interested to hear from HiTech about this.  Is there a reason why they built it the way it is now?  Or was it an oversight that they can add in the future?

If you did that, wouldn't they still be mapped that way for flight?

I haven't fiddled with it, but the X52 stick also has a Mode select dial.  I could be wrong, but I imagine that you might be able to use that to get around the problem you mention.  But I could be wrong, I have spent very little time messing with the Saitek software and I'm not fully versed on what you can and cannot do with it.
