Im gonna get to see the shuttle launch..well sorta
« on: April 27, 2011, 11:40:29 PM »
As I mentioned in the General forums. Im currently in Port St Lucie Fla doing some work on my moms house till Sat.
Turns out that when the shuttle launches . You can see its fireball traveling across the sky from her house.

I've been wanting to catch a launch for the better part of 20 years. But every time I've been in Fla when there was supposed to be a launch it was postponed.

Im not planning on making the trek to the space center this time and will be content in just seeing what I can see from here.
Lets hope that changes my luck with these things lol

The next shuttle launch is being put together but it has NOT been funded yet.  This very well may be your last one to see.  Make the drive!

My first launch was for Discovery's last flight and I'm so happy I did it.  The raw power of the shuttle was incredible and seeing it in person made the experience that much more amazing.  What you will never understand no matter how many pictures or videos you see is just how bright the flames are from the SRBs.  Even the photos I took don't do it justice and I was there.  An amateur photographer next to me with a zoom lens that would have made a horse jealous of its size sent me a few of his shots and you still just don't get it.  You're right there anyway and do you really want to say that you had a chance to see it but didn't take the opportunity?

Go.  Watch.  Enjoy.

Still have a bunch of stuff to get done. As it is it hasnt been a vacation trip and half the time I've been working till around 8-9:00 at night.
Depends how much I can get done tomorrow which is why Im not "planning" on making the trek. Haveta see what friday brings and my flight is on 3:30 on Sat so I dont have alot of time left.

Wish my father were still around and working down here. He used to work for the company that did the repairs on the tracking ships and got to see  a few right from the ship. Unfortunately at the time we had a rather bizarre relationship and he was down here working for almost two years before I even knew he moved. lol

Talk about your front row seating.

Any event. provided they launch before noon on Sat I'll be happy to see it any way I can

Yep wish I could see one in person but like you Dred; every time I have been in Florida near there the launches have been canceled or delayed and I never have gotten to see one.

Wish I could go on launch, maybe in space I wouldn't have to hear anymore "William & Kate" stuff.
BREAKING NEWS! Prince William has just told Micheal Jordan that he's a "bikini briefs" man.
Kate says she simply loves to squeeze The Charmin tissue any chance she gets.
I bet a lot of "Commoners" are getting sick of it too, over there.
Or are we (US) only inundated every minute.
I know it's Historical, but I'm about tired of it, glad it's almost done.
OK sorry, back to topic.
Glad to see Mrs. Gifford able to see her hubby lift off for Mission.
Always wanted to see launch. Maybe some launch, some day.

Hey Golfer, according to the Nasa web site STS-135 is targeted for June 28th 3:40 PM EDT.  From what I understand they already got the money for it because Atlantis is to be in ready state as the rescue vehicle for STS-134. "The NASA Authorization Act of 2010 directs NASA to conduct the STS-135 mission. The Space Shuttle Program has added the mission to the manifest to prepare for a potential target launch date of June 28."  So they tacked on the extra money, short crew of 4 and gave them a mission "Space shuttle Atlantis will carry the Raffaello multipurpose logistics module to deliver supplies, logistics and spare parts to the International Space Station. Atlantis also will fly a system to investigate the potential for robotically refueling existing spacecraft and return a failed ammonia pump module."  The short crew allows them to use a Russian Soyuez vehicle as a rescue vehicle.

Hopefully STS-135 happens and on time because my wife and I are making plans to drive down so the kids can see the launch.  Only chance we've got to do it.

I'm just relaying information I got from a space geek friend of mine who has media access to this launch. It cane from NASA folks and the space geek forums who know more about some things than NASA it seems.
