Moms are bizzare creatures
« on: April 30, 2011, 12:05:58 AM »
This will be a read. But worth it LOL

As I've mentioned. Im down in Fla doing some work on my mothers house.
Among the things I've gotten done for her is after a several years of hearing her moan and groan about her cable service with no decent channels to watch. Ho she wanted stuff like science channel and National geographic and a bunch of other stuff like my sister an I have in our houses and her wanting a hi def TV. On of my tasks was to acquire and set up a new TV and to see what her options were as far as a high def provider.

Now to be fair. My mother is 75 years old. So not being exactly tech or business savvy and and by herself. And someone who is easily confused. She's been afraid to go out and do this for herself. Cant really blame her.

So her tv provider was comcast.I shouldnt need to say more then that.
And for the longest time they were the only game in town. And as is typical of that company. They acted that way. The basic package they offer down here is nothing short of a joke. I was getting more channels with them up in NJ as part of a basic package 10 years ago even before Fios came around then what they currently offer here.

Anywho For just the TV my mother was paying $65 a month. First I checked with comcrap what they would offer with a HD box.
And not surprising. Mostly they offered a HD box and 3 months HBO for free but not much more then she is currently getting now. So I started looking around to whats in the area. ATT is currently wiring the area but had no date as to when they would be in this particular part of Port St Lucie. While going from store to store compairing TVs, prices features size etc we started talking to the Direct TV guy. and he offered us a pretty decent deal.

So we went ome and talked about it. In the mean time we had also decided on a HDTV.
Now to be fair. she doesnt need much. didnt have to be top of the line. But I wanted to get her a decent bang for the buck.
She was only really looking ot get a 42"

Long story short

Ended up catching a deal on a  46" LED LCD 1080P at BB
And we went with Direct TV. and I got the added pleasure of telling comcast they were history and why.
With DTV she is now getting 3 times as many channels and for less money then she was paying comcast for the first year. Second year it will be a little more then comcast would be by about $9.00 but she's still getting 100 more channels then with comcrap

Anyway after hours of searching for a TV. Buying the TVC. Buying her a bue ray player 5 hours spent putting her new TV stand together. hooking it all up, Making call after call to various Tv providers. All the time listening to her complain that she sick of seeing all the same shows on regular TV. Dealing with the signup with DTV. Doing the rebates, setting up the accounts. Getting the system installed. Walking her through the remote till she knows it cold cause after I leave Im not gonna be able to help her. (No easy feat with my mother.)
Showing her all the channels she has watching her get all excited cause its "just what she wanted"

We get everything up and running and she's good to go. 100s of channels to watch now. DVR. the whole 9 yards.

Whats the first thing she watches the first night everythings together?

You could have also gotten her a TV that has netflix and hulu access through internet connection and she couldve watched antenna-tv channels and gotten all her natgeo+documentaries plus movies through netflix and hulu.

course shes not tech savvy but all I can say is my 70 yr old grandma uses that setup and within a month she was all smiles. paying only about 60 bucks for the internet+neflix+hulu subscription.

Epic! Lol. Sorry to hear, Dred, but I totally know what you mean. I go through this with my mom and even with some of my past girlfriends.
