Attention Jarheads!

Will this make an appropriate gift for a graduating Marine?

My wife and I are going to see Stampf's son graduate in 2 weeks.

 have been keeping this a surprise up until now.

Since I am almost finished, (with the exception of a few surprises that I will keep to myself til I'm done) I guess Ican show you all.  I tried to figure out what an appropriate gift for a graduating Marine would be.

My Marine buddy said "Buy him a K-Bar, Marines love their knives.  It's a Marine thing!"

My wife said, "Make him something useful in your shop"

I combined both ideas, played with cardboard templates, and came up with my own design.  

I hope you all like it.  :o

Just curious, what kind of metal did you make it out of?

0-1 Tool steel.

I heated it in my ghetto fabulous brake drum forge, quenched it in oil and tempered it in my kitchen oven to about Rockwell 59-60 (my buddy from the tool/die shop I used to work at tested it)  I know that is a little on the hard side, but it's a knife, not a pry bar  :D

He will have to oil it from time to time, since it is not stainless.

Looks good. Is there some kind of retention system in the scabbard? I hope you made it nice and light so it will be more likely to be carried. More ounces than necessary he doesn't need.

Nice functional design. Clean, functional and no doodads he doesn't need other than subduing the bright rivets possibly. Well done and a great gift.

The sheath has Kydex exteriors with an aluminum welt.  I heated it and put it in a press made of plywood and an old rubber biatch that has seen better days.

It fits very snugly. Even when oiled it doesn't come out unintentionally.  I had a locking mechanism in mind, but figured it was too complicated for practical use.

It is as light as I could possibly make it given that it is a full tang.  I intentionally kept the blade short enough to save weight, look symmetrical and be practical as an every day carry, but long enough to hit something important if God forbid the need arose.

EDIT.

I subdued the blade with a cold blue solution.  The "rivets" in the handle are actually loveless bolts that I milled to heads off of and are stainless and, as such, won't take the blue.  The sheath bolts are Chicago screws and are also stainless.

Nothing a little M-Nu from the PX can't fix.  (do they still sell that stuff?)   :headscratch:

  At that hardness it will be hard for it to keep and edge,it will chip because of brittleness.

  Somewhere in the 40's rockwell makes a great edge that wont chip but reqires attention to keep real sharp.


  The ideal is a 40's edge with a backbone 55 to 60,thats what you'll find on a good Katana. 


   That said,you could make me 1 anytime,nothing like a fine handmade Knife!
