Need some advice-Just got my 91/30 Mosin Nagant
« on: May 08, 2011, 06:58:39 PM »
Ok so I took her shooting for first time today (Picked up yesterday) and all i have to say, great gun but it shoots SUPER high, im talking over a foot where your aiming.  Now I looked up putting a scope on it and I found out when you take off the leaf sight near the chamber there is a 3/8 dovetail.  Now I have got mixed responses about putting a scope there. Some say that the dovetail will slide, others say that it doesnt at all.  Also some people say a joined scopemount is better then two separate scope mounts in this situation. So im curious if anyone has done this before? I really want  put a scope on it, I just dont want to drill it and things like that.

I was looking at some of these mounts.

As you can see with this photo, that is the dovetail

Just want your guys opinions if dont mind.

They make little adjusters to adjsut the front sight.

Wish I could help, but I don't have any mounts on my Mosin Nagants. I have read that the best way to go is Drill and Tap, but I have heard some good things about the rear sight leaf replacement kits like this one. I think you need a scope with longer eye relief though.

There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

actually the reviews on that are HORRIBLE. Videos on youtube show it just jiggling around.  And yeah, most people say get pistol scopes for the eye relief.

Well the guy at the range told me they ALL shoot high. I guess the russians did it because they told the troops to aim for the belt, and it shoots high so it will hit them in the chest.

Well, you will get the most accuracy from drill and tap, good luck. The Bent Bolt Mods look cool too. My 91/30 is pretty accurate, it would do well with a scope and I have thought about it. I would go with the authentic soviet mount and scope and get the bent bolt, make it look like a real 91/30 sniper.

But you could buy two maybe three more Mosins for the money it would cost to do that.

First off those scope ring mounts are for a dovetail rail system, there dovetail scope mounts slide over your guns rail a Mosin Nagat doesn't have rails, i found what you need and here's the pic and the website, its only 12.99 and this rail fits into your dovetail on your gun then the scope attaches to that like the scope mounts in your link

Guys at the range say lots of things. My 91/30 will shoot 6-8" groups at 100 yards with a rest.

When you remove the leaf range sight there is a rail under it. And again that sight has horrible reviews. Every one ive looked at says the thing doesnt even stay straight.

I had one of these on my M44 with a long eye relief scope. It always came loose and I got sick of tightening and resighting so I just took it off and put the leaf sight back on.  It is also made out of aluminum so when you try to tighten the screws on it the whole thing flexes.

If I bother with putting a scope on it in the future I think I will mill a similar mount out of steel and braze it to the rear leaf mount.

I think I may try this dovetail thing. I have looked at a lot of diff people asking about it and a lot are saying it works.

FYI his 6-8 inch groups are nowhere near the bullseye. I have seen it personally.

Redman,

First off get the gun to a gunsmith. Have him examine the gun and make sure a scope can be mounted safely. I am also in favor of the tap and screw method of mounting with a good quality mount.

Also does the gun have a turned down bolt handle? If it is a straight bolt handle that goes to a vertical position to work the action you won't be able to mount a scope except well forward of the bolt lever. You can get a bent bolt handle fixed to the bolt to help clearance issues.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Naw its got the straight bolt, but if you position a scope just right or get the extended scope from the leaf mount position it allows full clearance of the bolt.
