Once a certain population is reached the chat buffer ceases to be a useful communication tool.  Worse still, you get enough donkeyholes that they entirely monopolize what communications are left.  It becomes a toxic environment and new players who are trying it for two weeks don't subscribe, a significant number of them due to "the community".

I think more than this, it's the fact that the larger the population the harder it is to self-police.  At a certain point, the anonymity is such that it allows people act like the donkeyholes you mention, and there's nothing the community can easily do about it.

I don't know how HTC has made this calculation - I see games out there with THOUSANDS of players in a single arena that seem to do quite well.  If the real problem is having idiots on chat channels, there are plenty of fixes for that - they could limit the ability of newbies or non-subscribers to talk on certain channels, they could enable some players to have a squelch or kick capability as they do in FSO, etc.

Different types of games have different player dynamics and draw different types of players.  It would seem those who like aerial combat are more volatile and quick to turn into donkeyholes.  :D

Newbie can't communicate, gets frustrated and quits forever.
Some folks would spend the first 20 minutes squelching half the arena.  Me, I just ignore them.
I can see it now:  jackwagonX just shot me down. I'll kick him from the arena and show him...  :t

Funny, but both the first two posts are asking for the exact opposite thing, so I guess it's perfect the way things are.

That was going to be my question as well.  I played WoW for more than six years, by far the largest population MMO in the US, and you never had anything like thousands of people in one area.  Even in the capital cities with the auction houses or in the expansion focused neutral cities you never had more than a few hundred at a time.  The worst aspect of WoW's chat were the cross-city channels and most people I knew tuned away from them because they were so bad.

MMORPGs, like WoW, generally handle controlling chat by limiting the general channel to the zone you are in, limiting common broadcast speech to a small radius around your character, having fairly robust ignore and reporting functionality.

you can have that with only a few people, just look at the bb and how most of the arguments are done by a handful of people.  not saying we should have 1 arena with thousands of people.

2 arena's seemed good, orange and blue and map doesnt change til the wars won.
Just like it use to be. I just don't like when we finally get something going and the arena changes to off hours. thx for eveyones input.

The single arena late at night works well, much better than two arenas with no one doing anything but strat raids.

The challenge is making the switch more seamless and less destructive to the active fights in in the two arenas.

-1 on haveing two arenas all day and all night, +1 on improving the switch.

matt I work until 10 pm pst.  before I would get home and had the choice of either a locked arena or another with only 20-30 people doing nothing but milk runs.  Now I get home take a shower, have dinner, read email and wait for 11 pm to log in with another 100 or so people and play for 3 or 4 hours.  guess which system the people like me who fly late (or really rearly, depending on where you live) support.

i live on the west coast i've never really had a hard time getting into either
orange or blue at anytime and that's before we had off hours, sometimes
their would be a wait htc could have uped the cap to fix that.it might
be nice if they started off hours arena 2am pst and and opened main
arena at 12 pst just a thought.

If it had been that easy, he would have done it. Unfortunately just upping the cap would had a different result that one might expect. The problem with such quick proposals was (& still is) that people do not really think about all the possible impact & consequences...
