I need rifle people to come in here
« on: May 08, 2011, 09:10:36 PM »
Ok so got my first rifle, a mosin nagant >.> yeah yeah, anyways.  I am new to this rifle stuff, ive been firing shotguns for like 8 years now. How exactly do you know if a scope can handle a certain guns recoil? I was thinking about getting this except the 4-12x version. How do I find out if its gonna break when I fire it? lol  This is just for range shooting, not planning on hunting.

I didn't know there was a limit on scopes? I figured they were all built sturdy and rugged?  :headscratch:

That is what I though..and I called my grandfather and he said he had never heard of a thing. He hunted and shot guns for like 60 years. So I think the guy may of just been BSing me to get me to spend more? I didnt buy anything though.

The only thing you can do is knock the crosshairs off but even that takes a hell of a lot.

Do you think the ones I linked would be sufficient for 100-300 yard shooting? Im only doing range, so.

Yes. I have a Leupold 3-9 (Imo one of the best brands) on my Model 70 .308 that has a pretty good zoom @ 300yds. I mean if you want the tgt to fill the crosshair you're going to need something with more power, but I have a good shot on a deer @ 300yds with my scope.

If it has a chrome barrel good luck sighting it in.  You won't be driving nails with it.

You would be fine with that scope. Just about the only thing I have ever seen happen to a scope...even the crappy, lowest price ones; is when someone drops the rifle and the scope hits first. Then its only an occasional problem.

As long as you avoid the really cheap imported no name scopes you should be fine. The recoil on a nagant isn't that severe, the stock design just passes it on to you more harshly than a better designed stock with a recoil pad.

Look for at least a Bushnell, think of that as the bottom of the pile. A Leupold would be much better but will be significant bucks. A Redfield is a good brand and is back in production.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

well if your using a Mosin.I dunno how you will mount that scope on it.I've got a 91/30 but i just use iron sights.if you ask me,the only gun you dont put a scope on is an elephant gun,i put a nice 120$ scope on mine and the scope not only left a ring around my eye,but the glass broke inside of it.a simpe 7.62 wont break a scope unless its made of dirt

Really? you need a scope????

Don't be a scope dweeb, use the iron sights. Whatever you put that cross hair on you will hit.

Or go out and buy yourself a Springfield M1A1 and stop playing around ! :bolt:

Actually I knew a guy who had a .300 weatherby mag that kept knocking the mounts loose, scope would "drift" out of position. Gunsmith eventually welded the mounts in place. Last I heard the scope itself had been taking the beating for something like 10 years with no issues.

I very much doubt that M/N is going to have that kind of recoil.

+1

If you want a scope gun, buy a good hunting rifle. You will be much more pleased with the results than scoping your 91/30.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

My advice is to take that rifle to the range, work with the sights, and work the 100 to 200 yard ranges.  The Mosin Nagant is a fun rifle to own and shoot, you have a piece of history!

Forget the scope.  That is a battle rifle meant for an infantryman, keep it at that.
