I used to to be an HSD tech for charter when I was in college and I will say that there is a reason they ask all those stupid questions. If i had more space I could tell you some stories that would make your head explode and they often started with "Your Fing service blows, I've already checked the easy stuff...a quick check of the diagnostic screens would show that they had in fact missed something easy. I was usually able to resolve a call in less than a minute. Very seldom was there an issue that was within our control.
Having said that, I would agree that not all HSD techs are any good at it.
To add to it, what a lot of people don't realize is that in many, if not most cities, the cable provider is actually just leasing the lines. The city owns them. To make matters worse some cities will even dictate the channel lineup. Most of the time it isn't an issue but we would often have situations where a region would have a normal channel line up, but smack dab in the middle would be some town that, for some stupid reason, would insist on changes. Customers would complain that they didn't have access to the same programming that the next town over had and there was nothing we could do about it.
I know that it's popular to demonize the cable providers, and I have no doubt that it's sometimes deserved, I have seen it first hand. I also know from experience that a vast majority of HSD customers are totally clueless but don't know it yet.
