At that point in time it was a new plane, a prototype, the 1 was, not borrowed..... And let's not kid ourselves, he was a warrior, perhaps one of the purest. He could have out climbed and escaped very easily against the SE5's and from most accounts had the chance to do so on several occasions. I am not downplaying what this man accomplished, that day or in history, however, I would not call it a gang. I would call that death, ego getting in the way of rational thought. Not to mention he was going for 50 kills that day, always trying to compete with Richthofen.

He got ganged. Sad, actually. He never really had a chance and was only dragging out the inevedable.
