New idea for the daily arena changeover.
« on: May 12, 2011, 04:00:45 PM »
Too many times you find yourself on a map with good action, only to see the message. "Arena is now locked. New Arenas available" come up. Meaning pretty soon you are going to have to quit, go to a new map, start a new fight...bleh. Its tiresome. I'm sure a significant percentage of guys call it a night right then and there.

If we have to narrow down to one LW main to reflect the dropping player population, why not just leave the most populace arena of the two open instead of killing all the fights in both?
"Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture, torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals."

Two questions:

a) Peak arenas are often large maps. So wouldn't that mean being stuck with a large map in off-hours?

b) When going back to two peak arenas, this map would have to be closed anyway. So this would result in a very odd, asynchroneous arena terrain rotation. Isn't that a problem?

You are not seeing the need to kick everyone out to make are rapid populate of each arena. With out the mass eject the populate time of the 2nd arena is drastically increased.

"Good action" means at least one big red and green darbar on the map.

I don't think having a big map makes too much difference, fights will tend to develop and attract those as wish to fight into clumping into big furballs at a base or two, and that's fine by me.  Why would the map have to be closed to open a second arena back up on peak hours?

It's a big difference. With a large map, the action is low key and very unstable. You will see single cons all over the map. Despite being looking for action and fun, most players try their luck elsewhere when things are not completely going their way. There are a lot of sneak and early aborted capture attempts. Only rarely there will be a big rad and green darbar. 10 players will attack 10 different places.
I did leave AH last summer because of that, because I wasn't looking for hunting single cons all over the map. The new, single small map offpeak arena made a huge difference. There is definite an unhealthy lower limit for player density. Consider that off peak hours hardly break 150 players these days, and for 5-6 hours the population is significantly below 100.

Why would the map have to be closed to open a second arena back up on peak hours?

Because that's what we had, and it didn't work at all. see HT's comment.

did you change the #'s when the 2 arenas are up? I notice stuff like 73/300 and 198/200 the last couple days. I could have sworn there was a 150 stage before.

actually it is like this right now -- orange 72/300, blue 200/200 (was 198 last i checked)

this doesn't seem right.

A good idea would be to let all those who wanna take bases and win maps have an arena that doesnt shut down....... :furious

Hell, I guess what I'm wishing for then is enough customers world wide to keep both arenas wide open all the time.

You know, I really think this is a bug. I've seen the same thing the first time I log in, sometimes.

If you immediately leave whichever arena you entered, the arena screen is back at your second example.

I think there is also a "bug" that if you get to the arena screen and it says 99/100 and five other people are at their arena screen and also see 99/100, all five can still get into the arena.

That's why you used to see 99/100 then 104/100 all of a sudden. This was also one of the reasons free 8-player got shut down. People were exploiting the bug and getting thirty or more people in their 8-player rooms.

i'm more wondering how blue got bumped to 200 cap when orange only had 73 people in it. wouldn't it be normally capped at 100 until orange hit 80, then go up to 150?   :headscratch:

i understand it reopens in the same condition that you leave, but your not in the zone closing the arena stops the motivation,i just log off when arena changes
to off hours. maybe changing the time for off hours to start to 5am est
2pst would be cool.
