Don't think any WWII birds shone like you are thinking.  The extremely shiny "chrome" look of some restored aircraft is a modern thing.  I don't think you want your fighter to reflect like that as it makes you too easy to spot.

The top of what?
The Bloo Navy planes or the Green/Grey Japanese planes?
Aluminum P-38s?

A6M2s were a white of some shade, not bare metal.

Maybe just maybe some American pilot cared enough to shine up their birds in their "off" time

German pilots on the Eastern Front knew when to disengage the Russians in air combat and get out when they saw the sun reflecting off American P51s in the distance.

Wax, not polished.

Your own example, "glint of shinty aluminum" is the reason.

Speed, not "Look at me!"

I remember hearing that Pappy Boyington would strip all the paint off his planes so that they could attract the enemy.

Pappy did that to attract Chuck Norris, who would of course have plenty of enemy chasing him... then he would whip all of 'em, Chuck included.

I am unaware of any airplane (real ones anyway) that were chromed. The shinny surface you see is just polished aluminum. Not sure when Boeing stopped painting their bombers and delivered them with just the bare aluminum surface. It saved weight and by the end of the war, we had so many of them there was no need to camouflage them.
