Vehicle Remote Entry Failures
« on: May 18, 2011, 11:07:18 PM »
Are any of you having trouble with your vehicle remote entry devices? My 2005 Toyota Camry LE no longer works with either of mine. I replaced the battery in my main one but that didn't help. I found on line the reprogramming procedure. The first time the REDs worked for five days and then failed. I've reprogrammed them twice since -- both times they failed the next day.

The dealer talked me through this process a couple years ago and everything was fine. I forget why they failed then. Didn't seem to be a major problem, or at least one that couldn't be fixed by reprogramming. The reprogramming is fairly intricate with a lot of driver door opening and closing and key insertion and removal, but doable.

I see on line that various vehicles have this problem now and then. I didn't expect to ever have this problem since most my friends haven't had it, and many of them have driven their vehicles many years and more miles than I have driven my Camry (e.g., one Acura has gone 15 years with its remote entry device still functioning perfectly.

I remain puzzled why my Camry remote entry device still accepts reprogramming but fails by the next day. One friend had a similar issue that was related to his truck's battery keeping enough charge. Another possibility is some kind of new electromagnetic interference, but I haven't used or carried the RED near anything that it hasn't been exposed to for a long time.

Some on-line sources say it is a car computer problem that can cost around $800 if the entire unit has to be replaced. The dealer assures me this problem is confined only to the remote entry device and is not any kind of indication of imminent failure of other car electronic components. I'm not inclined to take it to the dealer until the next routine maintenance in a few months.

So, any of you experienced a similar problem? If so, how did you solve it?  :headscratch:

Anything else not work...maybe a/c temp defaults to 75 every time you start the car?

I'm gussing that the remote base in Japan moved a few feet in the quake and your entry device can't relocate it. :)

Try replacing your key battery.

I did. Same problem.

Okay, preliminary responses indicate none of you have problem with your remote entry doodads.

My 2006 Saturn Vue and my wife is having trouble with her 2004 GMC Yukon remote. Hers is related to the buttons falling out but before that the remote wouldn't work reliably and mine is getting stubborn as well.

One year, eight months. (Rated for four years.)

Could be that your fob is just dead for whatever reason. No way to test it really that I could think of. Drop it to the pavement or get it wet? That could kill it like anything else. Just a little pcb in there. I actually lost both of mine for a Nissan. I found replacements on EBay for $26 a piece and I reprogrammed them myself. Don't let the dealer take you down for $100+ to do it. It actually took me longer to read the instructions on how to do it than it did to do it. Super easy. Filed under a caveman could....

Reschke, check and see if the contacts on your remote transmitter where the battery is and see if the solder connection has broke or is loose. That connection can be resoldered and the transmitter will continue working.  On your Vue that is.

Battery seems like the logical choice to replace, or you may have a bad sensor.

there may be a problem with the security computer in your car. it sounds as if it's losing it's KAM, and then you do the reprogram procedure. also, even though you've replaced the battery, do it again.......just in case.
