Disc golf
« on: May 20, 2011, 11:54:47 AM »
Anybody playing this?

I got a buddy who's been into it for ~20 years. I played once back in the 90's, but he's convinced me to give it a go this afternoon. Should be an interesting change of pace.

LOL, that's funny. When the subject would come up I'd make fun of his "hippy" sport. Today he was talking about an upcoming tournament and I asked if anyone was running a sportsbook in the area that I might find some action. He gave me a funny look to which I responded, "Yeah, those hippies probably haven't got the cash for a wager."

He's got a good sense of humor and we had a laugh about it.

That was pretty big in the Auton area. Not sure if it still is though. Proximity to UT meant lots of courses.

And since I'm just awful at stick golf....

If you know anything about disc golf my handle should give you a clue  :lol

I've been playing for 20ish years.  There are allot of courses around Atlanta, tournaments of various sizes are played almost every weekend somewhere in Georgia.

I was in the Houston Flying Disc Society around the turn of the century.  Then I got remarried.

Disc golf is in a few parks around Northern Virginia. It's fun but not as compelling as I once thought it might be. One of the most fun disc golf arrangements is in Sports Champion in Playstation Move mode in Sony's PlayStation 3.

There's a nice course on W and OD bike trail as it passes through arlington where they regularly move the holes and it has some great altitude changes rather than being flat.

I think I played it for about 10 years though I started in 1980 in coconut grove miami when I saw some guys playing during a run from Elizabeth Virrick gym at the former seaplane base there.

I got to the point where I stopped carrying "drivers", "putters", and other purpose made discs and instead used the late 70s era "master disc" for the entire course.

I do like the relatively new 200 gram "heavyweight" disc and will be trying it on the arlington course later this summer.

Threw a Linova Eagle today (160 class maybe). Only made par on 3 of 18 holes.

Had a good time and will be buying some discs in the near future.

What I find most interesting is the flight dynamics of these discs. My buddy was making them fly in an S pattern on the way down the fairway. It's a precision sport, no doubt.

Glad to get some feedback from the community on this one. I even know what a Hyzer is now :lol I was in the spot for a hard turning shot and buddy said' "Hyzer it in there". Apparently another friend of ours uses them to float great shots around bends.

Disc Golf is great! You meet so many great laidback people when you are playing. Ive been playing disc golf for about 10 years, was a competitive am/advanced class player on the Southern Nationals Pro Am Tour for awhile. Ive played from Chicago to Louisiana;from Texas to Florida. Just recently moved to Australia, joined up with the Perth Disc Golf Club when I moved here.  Just  took a trip to Melborne for the Victoria Open with the club and won the mens advanced class!

It's a fun game.  Especially if you smoke
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

disc golf is a blast.   there are at least 6 or 7 courses within 50 miles of here, so it's always fun to go do with a couple of buds
