Why do old people fall and get hurt?
« on: May 22, 2011, 03:21:17 PM »
Why do old people fall and then are unable to get up?  I don't see people falling on a regular basis, even at the old folks home.

an additional factor to what is mentioned in those articles is that the ear bones thin at advanced age. These bones are already almost invisible to the naked eye and mass loss on them can and does affect sense of balance. An elderly person who has those bones thinning out can still walk but their ability to sense an instability in their balance (and thus their response time) is thrown off.

I wouldn't be able to, I just didn't know why old people fell so much.  Why do people flame me for asking questions?  How does it make me a know-it-all?  If I knew everything, why would I need to ask questions?

If you didn't need to know everything, would you then not ask questions?

Take your pick: balance issues, frail bones (osteoporosis), joint mobility (arthritis), loss of muscle tone, etc., etc., etc...
