We have squads that specialize in fighters, bombers, GVs, jabo, ships, gunners, and now we have a squad that specializes in taking out trains?   :neener:

Trains seem nothing more than a waste of server processing and downloadable client content in the game these days, a real shame since of the three convoy types in-game they offer the greatest challenge to a single or group of players looking to do some convoy-seeking and destroying.

+1 to bringing them back.   When I first started AH, I accidentally ran over a train at low altitude and got a hail of ack for my trouble.

Ever took an M-8 and just sat on a long bridge waiting for a train to show up? Think thats fun, try it with an LVT-4.

Trains did not leave; they are still there.  As pointed out, they are the supply mechanism for strats.  When we had single strats all around the map, it seemed like they were all over the place.  The new mega-citystrat is typically supplied by just one train, and the HQ by another.  So, we actually do have fewer trains which are farther behind enemy lines, but we do still have trains.

The guideline for building maps is that strats are supplied by trains and bases are supplied by truck convoys (some coastal bases can be supplied by barges).  I'm not sure what would happen if some mapmaker used trains for some of the bases, just to have more trains to hunt...
