AMD Phenom II X6
« on: May 27, 2011, 02:26:30 PM »
I got it with my build, came with a package deal from newegg, and the reviews said it was "blazing fast" and the sorts. Dont get me wrong, the machine runs AH like a champ with firefox open, 7 or 8 tabs and a malware bytes scan running, but it doesnt seem "fast" over my brothers computer. I have 8GB of ram and a XFX 5750 graphics card, thats may be why the machine runs everything so smooth, or am i missing something here?

i havent done any tweaking to the machine what so ever. all ive done is update my drivers a couple times from the MSI Control Panel.

Processor: AMD Phenom II X6
Ram: G.Skill Ripjaws X series 8 GB (2X4GB)
Vid. Card: XFX Radeon 5750
mobo: MSI 880GM-E41

what's the operating system and version? if the os was preloaded, you may have stuff loading on windows startup that will slow it down, might have to tweak. what brand/model of hard drives are you guys running? many different factors can make a fast system run slow.

at an average of $2 per gigabyte, that was one very very expensive drive...try sata.  :lol

ok so you installed the os yourself...you double checked the bios to make sure your timings were all correct...you defragmented the drive after installing all the stuff you wanted and ran the updates...

what os is your brother running and what are his hardware specs?

which X6 CPU do you have?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007671%20600005574&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&CompareItemList=343%7C19-103-913%5E19-103-913-TS%2C19-103-849%5E19-103-849-TS%2C19-103-858%5E19-103-858-TS%2C19-103-851%5E19-103-851-TS

can you post the top 1/3rd of your DXDIAG report

a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit will usually have around a 1600MB pagefile used ........ you should tweak this down to around 1,000MB or less if possible ( but depending on what all you do this is a personal preference / suggestion )

also, did you change any settings in your BIOS?

Did you switch your memory to "Ganged Mode"  instead of "Unganged Mode" ??? ( if the MSI boards have this feature... I am not familar with MSI boards that much )

Did you place your (2) Sticks of Ram in the correct DIMM slots for your MB to gain the best performance?

Did you disable the onboard Graphics? ...... are you using a Hybrid Crossfire setup with your New VideoCard and the Onboard ATI VC ?

also be careful if you are attempting to OC your CPU/Ram, your MB seems to have alot of bad reviews over on newegg

hope this helps

but it doesnt seem "fast" over my brothers computer.

And what are the specs of your brother's computer?

Keep in mind, these multi-core processors don't make the computer faster so much.. they make it so it can run more things at once without slowing down.  If you can run AH at max with all that open at once (and especially while doing a scan) that tell me it's doing exactly what it's supposed to!

MY old Intel C2D does well enough but if it's doing anything in the background my AH gets choppy....

this here is what i have: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103851

I havent touched my BIOS, my RAM is in the right slots, havent over clocked my mobo, if i get around to hookin it back upill get the top third of my DXDIAG up (dad drilled the hole for the ethernet cable when i told him NOT to drill. havent seen a need for my computer to be hooked up, only to unhook it again when i get the cable)

about the onboard graphics, how do i disable them? i plugged my card in and that was that..except for a driver update.

by "ganged" vs. "unganged" mode you mean?

NOTE: when i get the money i plan on getting a new mobo, along with a case, and the other goodies.

hes rockin a DDR2 mobo haha. lemme play around with Windows XP and seee if i can pull up the specs of that.

I do have a sata cable, so its probably a SATA sdrive in that case... (sorry bout that, new to the computer world).

i havent touched my BIOS, would rather not eff somethin up and really eff the machine.

my brother is runnin Windows XP home i believe. has stated, he has a DDR2 MSI mobo. all i know about it. havent scrounged around his stuff too much. one of my buddies gave him an old nVidia graphics card, but im not sure on the model.

a 3.0ghz 2 core vs a 3.0ghz 6 core doesn't make it faster or slower. Just means you can do more as the OS spreads the workload out over the cores. To make it faster you have to overclock it and thin out what is running on your computer.

not to hijack..but on the subject of this thread.... using up more core space with less things running, and i cleaned it up a little with black viper.
DXDIAG: (note: dunno how to do a screeny, so ill type the stuff out.)

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (6.1, build 7600)
Language: English (Regional Setting)
System Man.: MSI
System Model: MS-7623
BIOS: Defualt System BIOS
Processor: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Processor (6 CPUs) 2.8gHz
Memory: 8192 bytes
Page File: 1711 MB used 14669 MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 11

EDIT: Using at least 3% of every core, some are up above 10% and theres a couple around 20%. only have Firefox up with 5 tabs and AMD OverDrive Utility...

just saw 45% on my 6th core for a half second.... havent touched anything.

that's the reason you're seeing the activity right there...do a fresh boot, disable your anti-whatever open task manager and watch it for 5 minutes without touching even the mouse (the keyboard and mouse use cpu cycles), do not open any programs at all...your paging file off the fresh boot should be somewhere around 700-900 megabytes if you're running a fairly lean process system...900-1100 for a not so lean process system.

if you don't touch anything you may see the cpu blip 1%-3% every so often for that 5 minute period...

If you have firefox with a couple sites open and the sites have flash advertisements running on them.. you're going to see load on your cpu. That's why Apple decided not to go with flash at all on mobile devices. Unnecessary load / decrease battery life.
