GEARING IN GV's
« on: May 29, 2011, 02:21:14 PM »
I'm rolling slowly in reverse.. pivot my tank and after about a 1/4 turn and i stop..it starts rolling forward???  We need to make up  what kind of tranny we have here.. if it's the HTC uber automatic..it needs a safety recall for popping out of gear. :bhead. It's either a game glitch or a programming bug...  Let's get it right  folks, I'm either in reverse or I'm not.

If you have any turn input, i.e. your rudder pedals or twisty stick are not perfectly centered, the automatic transmission will shift into forward.  Hold the S key down to stay in reverse while turning backwards.  When you stop, if your pedals have any spiking at all the only way to prevent the tank galloping off by itself is to turn off the engine.  That means, of course, you have the delay in turning it back on if you have to move fast again.

I've got an even worse problem: while driving at full speed in a straight line the tank will sometimes make a hard right turn by itself.  I don't know why; I've watched the twisty stick reading in the Control panel and I've never caught it spiking.  I guess my tank is possessed.

I keep getting stuck in first. And it's hell to get it out of first. I loved the old style.

This isn't the "rudder deadband" issue.

If you pivot at all you end up going forward after you have finished. Turn in reverse and it wants to go forward. You need to keep the reverse "pedal" down when turning to ensure you keep going backwards. Even pivoting in a Tiger or Panther, it wants to go forward after the pivot is done.

kilz's issue, however, is rudder input/deadband.

That's what I said: "Hold the S key down to stay in reverse while turning backwards."

He must have, because you let go of the S key.  :)

Think of it as a gas peddal.

What we really need is a gas peddal. If you want to go forward, you press W. You let go of W, you roll to a stop. Same for reverse.

Now wouldn't that be a PITA?

Actually, they could program it to be a tad more friendly.  Turning requires one track to move, but it doesn't have to be forward only.  If the tank speed is >=0 then turning could enable forward differential track movement, but if speed <0, it could enable backwards differential track movement instead of defaulting to forwards.  That way if you were backing up you wouldn't have to hold down the "S" key if you wanted to also turn.

I personally have never had a single problem in any tank. no crawling, no hiccups between gears. nada.

Ditto.  I did spend some time GVing yesterday and have to say I loved it much more than the old way.
I have all my forward/brake/steering on my pedals. I had no problems with the hills. When ever the speed started to fall off I touched the brake pedal to drop a bit more. The speed on the right of the commanders view circle shows what you have set speed to. Its a dash if you are accelerating or braking. I would then accelerate to a speed I knew it would hold and then left it there (Actual speed is on the left of the circle) - Worked like a dream. I was passing others struggling on the hill climb! Note, when you have a set speed on the right the vehicle will settle back at that after overshooting a couple of MPH. Just like a cruise control!

It did occur to me in another thread that if you have a problematic twisty stick, you could set the mode 2 (GV) rudder axis to the A & D keys now instead of assigning it to the analog axis. (Analog axis will remain in Mode1).

Good for you.  I've had all of them: getting stuck on hills, gear hunting going up hills, rolling forward from stop, and crashing into bushes due to steering over/undershoot yaw oscillation.

Same here.  I'm not sure how or why so many players complain or think they may have issues.  The new tank interface has behaved just like HTC said it was going to.  I think much of it is impatience and stubborness.

Many of these guys having no problems rarely travel any further than the distance to the nearest spawn camp while guys like myself routinely drive 2 or more sectors.
