just because something was made to deal with something else, doesnt mean it could actually do it.

the bombing altitude of the b29 is well up in the high altitude 20k-35k range.

the Raiden lacked a supercharger. crippling it in high altitude flight. it could barely catch a b29 from dead 6 and you'l spend most likely 15-20 mins just catching up to it.. the only luck it ever had of catching one is if it made diving passes at them. so to catch a B29 in a Raiden you'd have to be in the air, know the b29's exact altitude, and its exact flight path. so you can make one screaming pass at it.

the Raiden was also a dog, no match what so ever for the mustang. so if the b29's have escort, throw your chances of knabbing one out the window.

i think the german planes are a better match of fighting off the b29 than japs.

the Raiden lacked a supercharger.

Just like most fighters in AH, Raiden had a mechanical supercharger.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_J2M

its wikipedia, so take it as accurate/innacurate if you want. but they state it processes no supercharger.

"the lack of a supercharger handicapped the aircraft at high altitude"

J2M5 had a Mitusbishi MK4U-A Kasei 26a, which per wikipedia had a supercharger:

MK4U-4 26a - 1,820 horsepower (1,360 kW)- Mechanically-driven 3-speed supercharger

I haven't found anything on the J2M3's engine.

+ 1 The J2M5a please with 4 type 99 II cannons in the wings.  Will be the only Japanese plane capable of catching the B29 in FSO!

The Kanonenvogel had 6 rounds per pod, this is not even close to being open for debate.

Tyranis, every first-rank, front-line Japanese fighter that served during the war had a super-charger.  What the Japanese aircraft industry could never perfect during the war was a turbo-charger.  They did produce a few dozen test versions of engines with exhaust-driven turbines that powered forced induction systems.  But they were never able to put any of them into production.

Basically all WWII piston engined combat aircraft used some form of supercharging. Operational celilings would have otherwise been roughly half of what they were.

I think the high altitude capabilities of a plane matter little as so little of the fights here take place much over 15K.

Sure makes a difference in FSO, where fights often happen at 25K or more.

No need to convince me, I've wanted this plane for a bit now.

However, even though I would love the J2M5, that would probably be a stretch as it wasn't produced in all that great of numbers.

The J2M3a on the other hand would rock.  :rock

But if we get the J2M5, you wouldn't hear me complain.
