I remember in the not too distant past when a base take was much different.  One or two boxes of bombers, 5-8 heavy fighters, a few escorts, and 1 or 2 goons.  They would come in at 10-15k, drop the town and vh, and cap the field. This NOE to the corner of the map so no one will defend crap was nonexistant.

I don't know bro...when I got here in tour 54, the NOE was rampant, remember the BOPS and 110's, that was a huge gnashing of teeth back then.

I miss back long ago when we as a squad would fly NOE way deep into enemy territory and sneak a Vbase by their HQ. Actually one time we took the Vbase that spawned right at the HQ once. Talk about upsetting the other side  :D

Winning the war is not fun.  Not because strategy in the global sense is not fun, in fact quite the contrary, but because aces high strategy is mind numbingly dull and simplistic.  Give me something more than shooting at a town and I might involve myself in it.

Jeez you are getting bitter Grizz :)

Although I agree winning the war is pointless...er...well you know what I mean.

Still cracks me up that I found a post from 2003 where I said:

"The land grab is to the point of idiocy.  Everything is about stopping the other guy from taking your land.  So it’s pork all the fuel at any base that might impact on the fight.  Unless you are willing to take off from a long ways away, the role becomes one of two.  Either you are under the mob, getting vulched, trying to survive a 6 on 1 fight, or you are in the mob, vulching and getting caught in a crowd following the one unlucky SOB who got off the ground.  I’ve vulched more in a week of AH then I ever did in AW."

Clearly not much has changed in all these years despite the rose colored glasses of 'back in my day!"  :)

that's actually a fun sneak! I remember doing it at least once also (V28). I think Baltic still has these spawns and the bases are still capturable (?)

Not much has changed indeed - that number just seems to just keep getting bigger. The behaviour is exactly the same though.

I wouldn't call it pointless, just boring, but it could be quite fun.  I think the right type of war would even get the 80th involved and caring about it in some sense.  I'm not saying that will ever happen, in fact I do not think there will ever be radical changes enough for it to happen, but I do think there exists a strategic formula that makes the current look like candyland.

They should make it so that you need to knock down all the strats to 30% also. Give reason to use the b29 and me a reason to fly a 163.

I think I'm in the same boat as Grizz here.  The fighting is great but what about objective, context and strategy?  Folks that can enjoy the same furballing experience indefinitely are all set, but there are some of us who want something more.  If that something more (strategic depth/incentive) was there I submit there would not only be higher retention amongst subscribers but better fights even discounting a larger player pop.

Objective? Simple. It's to shoot the other guy down. Not bow up some cartoon pixel building, not to strafe some undefended town, it's to shoot the other guy down. That's it, that's what this game is truly all about.

I agree 100%...  There is no point in doing this in Aces High...   :D

Why not make having to kill a certain # of bad guys as well as taking real estate as part of the war winning criteria? Or would this  just lead to more timid gameplay?

Probably more timid by some.

But imho the even worse effect would be that every player would suddenly indeed become a resource and part of the war, no matter what. A silly candy mountain mission with guaranteed deaths in some exotic rides would suddenly "help" the enemies. Noobs or players who just do not care and up from vulched bases will get yelled even more at for "giving the enemy those important kills".
