Rudder Peddles
« on: June 05, 2011, 06:38:42 PM »
How the buggering hell did you guys make the transition from twist neck sticks to actual peddles?!

My mind is fudged when it comes to this. The past 3 days have been painful, I've constantly been muddling up which way the rudder turns and have got myself killed countless times trying to twist the neck of my new CH Fighter Stick.

How'd you guys manage!? I'm about 2 steps from a real ->  :furious  :bhead  :cry

For me, having real life flight experience, the pedals have always seemed natural.  I could never get used to the twisty stick.

Stick it out.  It will be worth it in the end.

Will take several weeks to sink in, what I found help is I don't rest my whole foot in the pedal (CH set here) instead  put the heels of my foot on the base just in front of the pedal itself and then rest the balls of my foot and toes on the pedal, I found it helps me make more fine control inputs than having my feet resting completely on the pedal.

I never used a twisty stick.  :p

That said, I suspect I am not nearly as aggressive with my rudder usage as I should be.

Try flying lazy 8's while using the pedals to keep the ball centered.

I went to pedals about a year & a half ago. I was ready to throw them out the window for the first 2 months. They absolutely sucked!  I finally got used to them & couldn't imagine having to go back to a twisty stick now. Stick with it. It will be worth it in the end.

Took me 3 months before I stopped ramming my targets.

Thing is you have to get used to them, THEN you have to adjust/teak them for best performance. You have to scale them so that you get that fine-tuned aim going. Don't want to have the nose swinging left and right past a target, right?

I use rudder pedals during the day and a twisty when I get home. Not easy to be switching (I need to buy a set of pedals) but it's not that big of a deal, you get used to both.

Are you asking us how to not be a gamer, and be a pilot?

We can't answer that for you.

(right now I'm stuck with a rudder on the stick <my [pedals broke>...  I feel so incredibly uncomfortable, unnatural, I cannot even begin to describe it.)

If you don't have rudder pedals, you aren't flying!
