Know of any free "carfax" sites?

Tittle pretty much says it all. Just trying to check a VIN number out on a possible new car but cant really find anything that is free.

If you're buying the car you can afford the Carfax.  I'm assuming it's from a private sale as any dealer worth dealing with will provide you with a Carfax.  It's a good tool but it's not perfect.  Good luck, what are you getting?

Its not private its at the dealer ship. Long story short we had a massive storm roll through the day this car got on the lot and it got hail damage. (Roof and Hood) Since insurance agencies around here are backed up out the rear end its taking forever to get the thing appraised and then priced as is and as it would be fixed. I could run back up there and ask for it but there a tad busy trying to get everything worked out from the storm. (every single piece of inventory minus one camaro and one corvette that were inside was damaged. It is a black 07' Tahoe

Just call them up and tell them you want the report.  It'll take them 20 seconds and they should be able to email it to you or do it in person when you're actually there.  It doesn't really matter if they're busy since you have money and they have cars they can't sell.

Pretend it wasn't damaged, take the price you were going to ask, get body shop phone estimate, subtract from original price.

Since the body shops are already seeing the scale of the damage to the cars they have already seen from that storm, they can give an estimate over the phone knowing the model and year of the car.

Just ask to see the report.  They have to let you see it.  If they give you grief don't deal with that dealership.  It takes about 30 seconds to pull one.  We pull them on request for our customers at the dealership that I work at.
