Warner Robins Air Force Base
« on: June 07, 2011, 01:42:11 PM »
For the last 3 days of camp we are actually going camping next to the air field. We are going to the Air Field Thursday and The Museum Friday. We will have a class for about an hour or Two with a person who actually trains real fighter groups. There's a strict No BS or your out in the van all day Policy but that shouldn't be a problem cause the group i'm in doesn't give much if any problem.

But I wanted some feedback from anyone who know anything about the area and the base, of if they have been on it. Also I was told there is a simulator? Is it one of those simulators that you buy a seat for at the mall, or the one with one person and all the works? I was told it was set up for he F-15 Eagle cockpit.

Edit: Sorry I didn't explain much, You know all that I know. We weren't told much.  :(

I'd be pleasantly surprised if they let a bunch of teenage boys into a multi-million dollar simulator. ;)

+1

on the other hand...the Smithsonian Air and Space Muesuem has some of them fancy sims. doubt its to the extreme of the ones at the air base, but it still isnt a pretty penny to put up and maintain....

Little Rock Air Force base let a bunch of teenage boys into a C-130 sim when I was in the boy scouts around '95 or '96.   ;)

Being in the boy scouts gives amazing connections that allows them to see behind the scenes stuff non-boy scouts don't.

At dulles airport, boy scouts were regularly shuttled in the bizarre airport elevated shuttles to the udvar-hazy center years before it was fully completed.

I always wanted to be in boy scouts, but the excuse with my parents back then was no time when my mom was home all the time and I had no siblings yet. This experience is something i've never done before, I love it, But I feel it could have made my life better if I had done it earlier on. These days I ask myself all the time "Where did my life go" Cause I never did anything fun when I was little. Wasn't until I turned 13 that life took somewhat of a turn, but by then Boy scouts was not an option.

To stray away from my sad and depressing story   :lol I think my main question was ignored. Has anyone ever been to this base and what is it like?

Actual air combat sim requires Secret Clearance to actually 'play' in.

As an ECM troop, I tried to 'play' in any I managed to get close to.

Was a blast at Taegu(K2) Korea as the F4 sim was next to our barracks

I took a summer school course years ago and we got to play in the ANG's C130 simulators as well as NWA's 727 sim.  Good fun!

when i was in 8th grade, i became the only kid to ever job shadow at fort knox. i was following an apache pilot. while there, they said due to my age i couldnt ride in a real apache.

so they took me to this red building off the main strip, where in the basement that had a full apache pretty much wired up to simulate flying, and let me control it for awhile.

was pretty fun  :airplane:

When I turned 13 I went to Utah as a present with my grandparents. When we landed in Atlanta I started talking to the pilots and they let me sit in the pilots seat. Have the picture hanging downstairs.

been there many times. The simulator is a full scale sim. Also, every C130 comes to WR AFB for maintenance. I have some friends that work there on the C130s and F15s

I have no information regarding a simulator on the base, but the museum does have so-called simulators.

There is one of the "mall" type sims that you climb into with 6-8 other folks and ride a darkened roller coaster......

Then there is the area of the museum where groups can "fly" with simulated atc and even do some combat. This set up involves multiple cockpits networked and using a customized version of MS Flight Sim. The controller is an actual USAF veteran controller.

The museum is well worth a trip. You will see a P51 and P40. And a few larger airframes such as a B29, C46, C47, B25, Ventura.

The museum has the cockpit of a Waco glider imbedded in a hedgerow. There is an A26 sitting outside on static display.

I think you will enjoy the visit.

Be sure to take a look at the SR71 and D21 airframes. ICHIBAN is GORGEOUS!

I make a trip to the museum every 3-4 months, just as an escape from the everyday life.....

Enjoy your visit!
