Getting the most out of short ranged aircraft
« on: June 11, 2011, 09:21:25 PM »
This is directed at the newer players.

Take care with throttle settings for some of the shorter ranged aircraft like the Yak-9. You should not be going past "Normal Power" or "Max Cruise" throttle settings untill you engage the enemy in a fighter. On your clipboard there is an "E6B" . Click that and it shows the various settings for the a/c you are in. RPM and manifold both. You will be surprised how much fuel you can save when you dont burn around at almost full throttle for the first 30 min of an FSO frame. Also, flying at low level for a long time burns more fuel. Get in the habit of managing your engines. It will make the difference in having the fuel to fight when you need it and/or getting home at all.

In the MA most flights tend to be shorter (sometimes) and many players roll a/c with DTs. In an SEA event like FSO (or a Scenario) you fly what you are assigned and so there might be a few out there that just dont consider using more conservative settings to eak out longer ranges. Not every fighter has gobs of gas on board.

For info.   :salute

As an addendum....sometimes drp tanks are not an option as well. But Squire makes an excellent point about fuel management. Most times you know at least a day or so ahead of the event so you can tool around offline in a mission of your own in the aircraft you are assigned and get used to the fuel burn rate so it's not a surprise when you look at the gauge and see that you are sucking fumes and still have to go 8 sectors for home. If you made it out of the fight.
