Hello Midwar
« on: June 12, 2011, 05:25:44 PM »
In case any of the guys in Midwar wonder why I haven't been on in a while, no, I haven't quit. Had a major virus problem so took the computer in, had it reformatted and xp reinstalled. Problem is, the virus problem is still with me as I still can't get online with DSL.

Gonna go back into the shop tomorrow and ask for some advice. Not sure when I'll get back up but I can't do it on this dial up connection. It's seems slower than 14k. Might be part of the same issue.

Anyway, better get back in the game cause there's a BASE UNDER ATTACK!!!

How would a virus survive a clean install of OS???

Because they didn't format? Maybe they skimped?

Basically reinstalling the OS won't do much for a virus. You have to find and neutralize the virus or totally reformat. I've heard a few really tricky buggers hide in the boot sectors but most decent AV pick that up right away.

Actually it can.  If, as has been mentioned, it's into the boot sector, or worse, the BIOS.  If it's into the latter, the MOBO would most likely be bricked.  Also, if there's a second partition on the HDD, I've seen virus' jump over there and "wait" to reinfect the newly installed reformatted OS.  It is advisable to also rewrite the MBR to make sure all malicious codes are gone.

To format MBR in DOS/Windows 9x/Windows XP, use:
FDISK /MBR

To format MBR in Windows Vista / Windows 7, use bootrec.exe in Windows Recovery Environment:
bootrec.exe /FixMbr

I just stopped by the shop where I had the drive reformatted. The tech I spoke with doesn't think it's a virus as he feels everything should have been cleaned out with the reformatting (I've heard about boot sector viruses before). He thinks because it affects both my tower and laptop, it's likely a problem with my connection, as in data cables.

That's what the phone company said when I called them, but I don't see why that would happen all of the sudden. Then again, thinking about it, that did happen once before "all of the sudden".

The guy at the shop said it the DSL and browser was working fine when it left their shop as that's how they downoaded and installed the handful of programs they included with the reformat. He said I could come by and they'd hook the computer up to make sure the browsers are still working.

I'll do that after work. If it works with their DSL, I'll go on the assumption it's something in my data or phone lines and start working on that.

Bad phone lines would also explain why this dial up connection is dreadfully slow.

I'm back in the game now. Took it by the computer shop and he was right: Browsers worked fine in the shop, so I knew it must be my connection. Went home and persevered with AT&T's support and finally got a real person. She fixed it.

It was a problem with my modem not having the right password and user info. I suppose I'll take some of the blame but their activation process pretty much seemed to leave out non- standard modems. My modem was the one Yahoo DSL sent me when I signed up around 8 years ago. Their list of modems during the activation process didn't include mind so I couldn't figure out how to add my new passcode.

She walked me through it and took me to the right place to enter the info, but even when she walked me through it the first time it didn't take. Once it accepted the info, it was just like nothing ever happened and I was up again in Midwar once I got the game installed.

I have exactly the opposite opinion and experience.  Cable never delivers on promised speed due to sharing the connection with neighbors whereas DSL is all yours.

Not to my knowledge.

Tyrannis, perhaps you should think twice before posting muck on the forum.

there is a player who goes around in early&midwar with the name "tiger"(and some random letter in the front of the tiger)
who switches sides soley to bomb each countries cv. he's done it in early war&midwar. back when i used to fly in those arenas we hated the guy.
especially when we had the cv in a good position to snatch a field then he goes to that countries side and snitches it out.
when he did it one time tho, he made the mistake of typing it out on all channel instead of country. thats how we caught him the first time.
then he started to assist us in base capturing using the cv, until we had the cv allmost in position off an enemy field, then he'd switch sides and ether suicide bomb it, or hit it with the shore battery.

it got old, fast. thats why im asking.

Nope. Because, if you've spent any time in Midwar, you'd know I'm generally the one scolding others for sinking carriers for no reason. Pisses me off as carriers provide one of the best fight opportunities in the game- fast and furious action.

I can think of only 2 carriers I've sunk in all the years I've played the game and both were sunk by accident.
