recycle anything still useful except the case...then start from scratch. what's your budget? depending on the age of the system, you're probably going to have to replace the ram, cpu and power supply as well.

It depends.  If it's a standard configuration case then it's not a problem.  If the manufacturer uses non-standard proprietary case then it can be a nightmare.

In the whole scheme of things, the case itself doesn't have to be all that expensive.  Newegg right now has about a dozen choices under $40 (with shipping).  For a system that is "nothing fancy" then just about any case should do.  The last computer I built used the cheapest case I could find (it was for a squaddie who couldn't afford a system so we all pitched in and donated to the cause so I was working with a limited budget).  I ended up finding a case for $20 with free shipping and I have to say it actually wasn't too bad a quality.  The biggest drawback is that he can't use the front audio ports with anything plugged in the front USB ports because of interference due to poor quality of the front port circuit board.

when you look at your case from the rear is the mobo on your left or on your right.  if it is on the right then you must buy a mobo thru hp and they're more expensive than if you bought a case and mobo to go back to a standard configuration.

My PC is an HP Pavilion d400e. The site only refers me to a reseller that is far too big for this Lil fish. I got a recommendation from the hp site, but dont know much of the jargon:
Motherboard (system board) - Amberine GL6E - Includes three PCI slots, two SATA connectors - Without ATX extender card
RoHS: Original
From the back the mobo is on the left side.
