For some reason I think it was rigged for the main booster to stay attached, the way it exploded made me think that it was intended.

The orange tank. Is a tank not a booster. On the actual shuttle it holds liquid oxygen and hydrogen for the engine on the spacecraft.

I know that but for the show the orange tank had boosters on it.
