Falling Skies
« on: June 20, 2011, 02:42:31 PM »
Anyone else watch the pilot of this series on TNT? I went into it with low expectations and enjoyed it. Basically same as Walking Dead, but aliens instead of Zombies. Looks like it has a higher budget than Walking Dead, slightly better CGI and acting. However I still prefer the story and writing for Walking Dead.

I saw previews...... at least it's not a reality show.

I saw that it was coming on last night but did not get a chance to see it.

The production seems very similar to Walking Dead although I felt like the writing and acting was a little stronger in Falling Skies.  Some of the dialogue in Walking Dead made me cringe.

I saw it. Maybe I was expecting too much but it was a bit disappointing to me. I thought the acting was wooden and they tried to roll too much into it with the criminal hijackers. I thought it was kind of funny that the aliens who can traverse space systems didn't get small arms to any higher level than cartridge style weapons. Their "missiles" or air to ground weapons were definitely advanced. The fact that the "skitters" are really so hard to kill is a bit much. A full auto AK can't penetrate them but a shotgun and a big bore pistol with hollow points can.  :huh  :huh

I'll watch a couple episodes when it goes to weekly shows but I am not really all that impressed by it. I thought Battle LA was better in the acting and "reality" aspect.

i watched it, the beginning sort of threw you into the war without really knowing how they came here other than the little kids drawings and commentary at the start of the show, maybe a few episodes into it they will reveal how they came here. i'll watch it for awhile and see where it goes.

why make the foot soldiers have hand helds when the armor itself can protect them? and also we havent seen a weapon yet. could find they have them later.

close range shotgun would have that impact just from the blunt force and the pistol was that close also. like they said you gotta get close to penetrate the armor no matter the weapon. by the way they never said the AK couldnt, just not from how far he shot it. bet ya if he was point blank itd go through also.

Humans cant use heavy weapons under threat of heavy retaliation therefore the skitters dont need weaponry as they ALWAYS have a mech to cover long range and skitters move in hand to hand after humans cant fire back as easily. so why need the firearms for the skitters when the armor covers them enough to do the job beyond necessity?

If this were a movie, then I would agree with you. Since this is a TV series, I will say it is going to be of lesser quality.

I like what I've seen so far. Much better than "V" or "The Event", but not as good "The Walking Dead".
For a post alien invasion story, it had the feel of what a post Judgement Day, Terminator story should be. (Terminator: Salvation really dropped the ball)

I liked it even though it did seem like a cross between the Walking Dead and the Tripods.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

Once you get past the point that a shotgun has intimidation power (to humans in this case) you start to look at ballistics. The 7.62x39 round has far far more penetration power than a shotgun with buckshot. A handgun is so far behind the rifle round it isn't funny. The fact that they made a point of insisting on a hollow point round in the pistol is even more ludicrous for penetration. The tactics of the skitters is not my concern, my point is that the show has an inferior weapon, especially the pistol as more effective in penetration of the alien. In short they have is bassactwards.

Their website had some photo's under the heading Weapons:
They have a photo of a Squad Automatic Weapon but it's labeled as a 'Browning M-50, 50 cal machine gun'
at least the got it right in the show with that M2 monted in a GTO although I think pickup trucks would be more realistic, this being set in America and all.

Only watched the first ep, and 1/2 of the second but will have to see how it develops - In some respects I expected a cross between BSG & Red Dawn - but got neither.

The Aliens need to watch some James Cameron blu rays or something, because my biggest concern about the show was how casual the humans were - or how bad the Aliens military are.
They're hold up on a "mission" near that school, and they are all standing out in the open with a guy who's SAW is sitting at his feet while he's laughing and break dancing...huh? What the?
I get the insurgent angle of the show, but when the Opfor considers any human a target, standing around in the open seems kinda insane. For an Alien force which has wiped out the organised militaries of the planet - but doesn't have the tech to spot a column of 100 fighters /200 civvies with mixed vehicles walking along a highway out of a major metro area in broad daylight?!?

Looks promising, but needs a lot of work

I agree with this point, it was something that bothered me during the show. Instead of the aliens actively pursuing the people, they seem to set traps with 1 alien and 1 mech unti. Still I feel that the flying craft would spot a large group of people and swiftly bomb them (especially considering they see using heat)
