Soccer = the root of all evil in the United States of America sports. The reason that our kids have grown up thinking that there are no winners and losers in sports; only everyone gets to play and have fun.

SOCCER = A virus that needs to be eradicated like polio!

I might add Soccer - The sport of world socialism. It's outlawed in my house.

What does soccer have to do with world socialism?  The only similarity I see is that they both start with an 'S'.  To refute: The post-game riot from a soccer match actually resulted in a violent secession and the creation of a new country!  Neither were socialist, and there's nothing international about forming new countries.

Why do so many in the United States view soccer as a 'wimpy' sport?  If you've actually played a highschool match, they're brutal.  The running never stops.  There are no breaks, other than for the ball going out of bounds, half-time, and fouls.  It's not a contest of pure endurance either, one always moves at a full sprint.  Sheer muscle won't win; with the adrenaline pumping, that net starts looking awfully small.

For those who complain of its lack of contact- why are golf, tennis, baseball and softball not similarly disparaged?  These four sports are absolutely massive, feature little to no contact, but are all regarded as either high brow or respectable.  Yet soccer, with referees blind as bats and players easily twice your size coming at you like bats out of heck, is called 'wimpy'.

With the US victory in the Mexican-American War, it should have just taken control of the whole place and we'd not have half the issues we have today.  Think about it.

BTW... if soccer is what Mehihco climgs to for national pride, then by all means may they win every game.  They need all the help they can get.

Central and South America is one tough place.  I think any government would be challenged to take it on.

Ok, so US fans love violence.  Why are golf, volleyball, tennis and running all huge?  None of these sports allow contact whatsoever.

They're not "huge" at all in the terms of the USA supporting the top athletes in tennis and golf. Tigers days are soon done, and the upstart is rory mcelroy. Tennis is pretty much the same except they're is almost no one that competes at nadals, djokerics levels.

Soccer fans are always having to defend how tough the sport is, because it's soccer.

Actually, the fact that it's soccer should make it obvious how tough it is. :neener:

Soccer: fun to play, excruciating to watch.

And how can man die better, than facing fearful odds.
For the ashes of his fathers and the temples of his Gods."

Watch Spain and or Barcelona play, nothing excruciating about that.

It's not about being tough, manly or hard, football is a sport for everyone to watch or play. I played for 30 years and knackered my knees doing it, but wouldn't have it any other way. Getting up and playing local football in England in the middle of winter on a sunday morning is not comfortable, but we all enjoy it. It's actually called Assciation Football (soccer is a nickname for it).

Its got its bad points, diving, feigning injury etc. Plus England are crap! But I'd still watch a classic game over anything else!

I used to think so but after the World Cup with Spain winning almost every match 1-0 and watching Barca all year I'm had enough of the tiki-taka. There's some great moments to be sure, and some great runs by Messi but in the whole give me Newcastle v. Arsenal, or Blackpool v. anybody.  Spain and Barca play keepaway for 90 minutes, the better EPL matches tend to be more wide open and exciting.

Although the amazing thing about Barcelona is that when they lose the ball they get it right back - their defense, or their forechecking if it was hockey, is ridiculously good.
You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.
