External throttle settings sounds
« on: June 29, 2011, 11:53:42 AM »
ok so i saw the damaged engine sound thread. how hard could it be to input an external sound setting that makes all external aircraft sounds set to the throttles so other pilots can hear them also?

(you can hear your throttle setting, why not theirs?) :aok It'd help alot in close dogfighting and rolling scissors

in the air, your engine should be making so much noise that it drowns out the engines of other aircraft, unless you're turning your engine off...on the ground, engine off, i could see having the sounds synched to what people are doing with their throttles.

even at maximum settings you can still hear the externals just only once they reach a certain distance away from you. while engine is on, external engine sounds are cut to i believe 1000 yards? away unless its a jet or rocket then it is approximately 3K. I have run with my engine at full and i can still hear the enemy coming. and you are more than likely going to be hearing another P38's twin allison engine sitting beside you on the runway waiting for a formation takeoff with you with its engines at idle. and i dont know about you gyrene but when im rolling scissors with a 109K4 in my 51 i can more than definitely hear its engine next to me at 600 yards. but what if that 109K4 suddenly chops its throttle? youre going to hear a difference in the engine's throttle.

I have never heard another aircraft over the sound of my aircraft when in flight...'tis arcade stuff.

I would imagine being in the thick of several hundred other heavy bomber aircraft in formation would be slightly louder
than your own aircraft -- however I have no experience in the matter so Colmbo's word reigns supreme  :)

No idea of a big formation,  most I've been in is 3.  :D

Once had an F-16 fly overhead maybe 100-200' above us, as he passed he went into burner and did a roll....didn't hear a thing.

That's why a lot of WW2 pilots had hearing loss  :aok

It's also why LW pilots in Bf109s could move into close formation with Hurricane Mk.1s and then shoot one down after the other. I mean like CLOSE formation, like he was flying with them, then just drifted behind the closest and shot it down, repeat 3-4 times until one of them bothered to look behind them.

Such stories were reported several times during the BOB.

When I was younger, I was lucky enough to be friends with a handful of pilots at the local muni who all flew airshows.  I got to go up quite often and play.  Once, we flew a close box formation on the way to a rural area for them to practice (#1 was a T-6 Texan, #2 & #3 were Super Decathalons, and I was riding along with the guy in his Christian Eagle as #4). We were all tight; like 5-10 feet or closer.  I couldn't hear a damn thing except the plane I was in.  Wish I had a camera with me that day.  :(

I've read several accounts where Allied pilots saw the smoke from the Luftwaffe's engines which coincided with them chopping throttle. As for sound, they couldn't hear other planes over the rattle of their own engine generally.

Delirium, I think you have it backward. They belched a bit of smoke when gunning the throttle. It's hypothesized as one reason the bomber gunners overclaimed so much. They fired, saw a belch of smoke, claimed a kill. In fact it was probably the LW pilot firewalling the throttle to get out of dodge after making his attack run.

So the theory goes, at least.

If I do, it is because the historical pilot had it backwards as well. I remember what I read, I just wish I could remember the famous stick that was well known for saying it also.

The Luftwaffe would throttle back as they flew into a Allied bomber formation? That takes some serious cojones.

I like this wish idea. I've thought it would be a nice feature several times before, but mostly for realism sake. The only times it would matter to me is when I'm with the engine off or at near-idle speeds. Also it would be fun when you're in a GV to hear. As it is now, in a GV, when you hear a plane you hear the same engine sound. When an aircraft is on the ground taxiing, you still hear full throttle. Not a bad wish.

generally speaking, it was while diving that they would cut the throttle to keep from overspeeding the prop and risking a blown engine.
