I remember something similar with my cat. Went wrong quickly. No one would take him to the vet except me. It was hearbreaking. It was as if he knew. He panicked in the car and peed. He knew he wasn't coming back. His cries haunted me. I swore after that, no more pets. This was the second cat and the second dog I brought for execution. No one else would do the job.
I know what you mean. I have had cats ever since my dog died back on my last day of third grade.
I had a cat that would get sores on his legs that would open up out of no where and would leak fluids. Well just over 2 years ago, he got really sick and we knew he wasn’t going to make it. He wouldn’t eat and just stayed in one spot and was just acting plain old weird. He lasted a couple of days, sometimes acting like he was getting better, just to get worse again until one night when his breathing was really slowed. We decided that it was time so we took him to the vets.
On the way there, he was crying just like he had the night we brought him home when he was still looking for his mom. We got to the vets and had to wait longer than we should have, but then a dog came out of a room and scared him. His bladder went and he peed all over me and the box we had him in. As we were going into the room to have him put down, he flipped out and started biting his foot. My mom was holding him over her shoulder and i was behind her and i saw him doing it, so out of instinct i tried to get his foot out of his mouth. Well then i got bit, and i got bit well. We got him into the room, and the vet didn’t even have enough time to inject him before his heart stopped beating. He lasted about another 30seconds to a minute and just slipped away.
They said that night that he had congestive heart failure. The sores were from the fluids coming off the heart and his belly was very hard also from the fluid.
I then had to go to the hospital because they didn’t have his records for some reason and we weren’t sure when the last time he had his rabies shots. So I had to be given a steroid for the bite until we found out if I needed treated for rabies. We had to take his body to the wild game place for them to do the test, which ultimately turned up negative. But I have a large puncture scare on my finger from it.
It’s hard to believe the things you will do for your pets. My mom’s cat got very sick all the sudden one night. He wasn’t moving and he never came to my mom when we got home like he always did so we knew something was wrong then. Then he finally did come and he couldn’t jump up into the chair, so we took him to the vets and they ran some test and as it turned out, his urethra had become blocked and he couldn’t pee and his bladder was filled. They had to drain his bladder and had him hooked up to a bladder bag for like two weeks. We spent nearly two grand saving him. The vets said they couldn’t believe he survived. They expected him to pass that night, but he made it. My mom then went over every day he was there to visit with him.
Now we just have to watch what we feed him because the food was most likely what caused the blockage.
But when that cat finally passes away, my mom will be devastated. He’s her baby. While all of our cats were wild, they are probably some of the smartest and most affectionate cats out there.
Sorry about your loss Mav.
