Pets are tough to loose, specially when you have to make the call.  My condolences.

Had to put my German Sheperd down in 2007.

I might get over it someday.

Time dulls the pain though.

They are family members Maverick.

You just gotta grieve it out.

Sad news Mav, but at least the poor cat isn't suffering anymore.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

I remember something similar with my cat. Went wrong quickly. No one would take him to the vet except me. It was hearbreaking. It was as if he knew. He panicked in the car and peed. He knew he wasn't coming back. His cries haunted me. I swore after that, no more pets. This was the second cat and the second dog I brought for execution. No one else would do the job.

I know what you mean. I have had cats ever since my dog died back on my last day of third grade.

I had a cat that would get sores on his legs that would open up out of no where and would leak fluids. Well just over 2 years ago, he got really sick and we knew he wasn’t going to make it. He wouldn’t eat and just stayed in one spot and was just acting plain old weird. He lasted a couple of days, sometimes acting like he was getting better, just to get worse again until one night when his breathing was really slowed. We decided that it was time so we took him to the vets.

On the way there, he was crying just like he had the night we brought him home when he was still looking for his mom. We got to the vets and had to wait longer than we should have, but then a dog came out of a room and scared him. His bladder went and he peed all over me and the box we had him in. As we were going into the room to have him put down, he flipped out and started biting his foot. My mom was holding him over her shoulder and i was behind her and i saw him doing it, so out of instinct i tried to get his foot out of his mouth. Well then i got bit, and i got bit well. We got him into the room, and the vet didn’t even have enough time to inject him before his heart stopped beating. He lasted about another 30seconds to a minute and just slipped away.

They said that night that he had congestive heart failure. The sores were from the fluids coming off the heart and his belly was very hard also from the fluid.

I then had to go to the hospital because they didn’t have his records for some reason and we weren’t sure when the last time he had his rabies shots. So I had to be given a steroid for the bite until we found out if I needed treated for rabies.  We had to take his body to the wild game place for them to do the test, which ultimately turned up negative. But I have a large puncture scare on my finger from it.

It’s hard to believe the things you will do for your pets. My mom’s cat got very sick all the sudden one night. He wasn’t moving and he never came to my mom when we got home like he always did so we knew something was wrong then. Then he finally did come and he couldn’t jump up into the chair, so we took him to the vets and they ran some test and as it turned out, his urethra had become blocked and he couldn’t pee and his bladder was filled. They had to drain his bladder and had him hooked up to a bladder bag for like two weeks. We spent nearly two grand saving him. The vets said they couldn’t believe he survived. They expected him to pass that night, but he made it. My mom then went over every day he was there to visit with him.

Now we just have to watch what we feed him because the food was most likely what caused the blockage.

But when that cat finally passes away, my mom will be devastated. He’s her baby. While all of our cats were wild, they are probably some of the smartest and most affectionate cats out there.

Sorry about your loss Mav.

Many have noted that cats don't show symptoms until it is too late.  This is because in the wild showing they are sick makes them more vulnerable to predation.  Because of that they hide sickness for as long as they can.

It's always a tough thing to do but you can be sure your cat is suffering no more and that takes an unselfish person to see to that.

Far to many people keep pets alive for selfish reasons, yes they are family members in my books,I just wish my family could end my suffering when the time comes.

My boys want a pet now. I won't be having it. Not going through that again.

For the pain of the loss of a pet, I could not see my life or my families lives without having pets in our home.  The love, companionship, and memories that we receive from our beloved pets far outweigh the pain of their deaths.  Yes, their deaths are heartbreaking, but well worth the time of having them around.

I'll also refrain from my cat jokes but here is something I might add..... When we are really busy at the shop we generally say "we are busier than a three legged cat in a liter box".

Well, my Daughter's boyfriend just adopted a three legged cat. The cat is pretty cool and her boyfriend is the type to take good care of it. First thing I asked him is how does he handle the liter box. :)

Sorry to hear that Mav, we lost one of our cats back in December and it was pretty gut wrenching.  Blood clot broke loose and paralyzed his hind legs, we woke up at 3am to some awful cat noises by 4:00 we were at the pet hospital emergency room saying our good byes, he had no symptoms of any sort prior.  It's still hard to think about.

Thanks for the replies folks, it really is appreciated.

We will be waiting a while before getting another cat. There is a chance that the cancer was a viral feline cancer so we will be tossing all the toys and other items that we had for him. The last thing we want to do is pass it on to another cat. It most likely will be in September before we get it. We'll be visiting the grand kids then and will be in one spot for a couple months. I'm sure there is a pet rescue operation in the Lafayette area for us to make a friend and take home a new "fur kid". Besides, the pug is kinda lonely now. No one to chase her around the RV.

Wow... viral?  Is there a lifetime on the virus if on other items?

I had a Siberian Husky with cancer once. Had to put her down too. Yup Chelsey was her name.
