Fix F4U-4 canopy armor plate
« on: July 01, 2011, 11:50:06 AM »
Based on a conversation from another thread, I am finding that the F4U-4 canopy as represented in game is incorrect.

All of the images I can find of a -4 show that the canopy rear armor plate present on all but the birdcage -1 was removed/decreased.

Here is one such pic.

There are others....

1. Your picture is of a POST war F4U-4x. Note the red bar in the national insignia. Red of any kind was removed from the Allies national insignias in the PTO to not be mistaken with the Japanese national red insignia.

2. The intial production group that saw action had the canopy support. From Vought's heratige photo gallery of the F4U-4.

All of the early 1945 versions have the canopy support. I got beaten up over this in the AH Forum a few years back myself.

Just understand that's a Korean War vintage F4U in that picture.  Don't know if that changes anything or not...

EDIT:  Looks like Bustr beat me to it

Depends on what aircraft it looks like it may have boiled down to pilots choice?

These are all WWII era aircraft.

I'd fly the F4U more if that thing was not there.  I don't know how many in WWII were like that but so be it.
