Carpet bombing runways is an art.  I would love to do a MoM mission of B29s and carpet bomb a runway with 50,000 bombs.  Call it a stress test for the server.  :D

in WB when you did it there was an additional reason to do so.  there was not a way to stop fighters by dropping the revetments but when you bombed a runway if someone went threw the crater they would loose the landing gear and crash.  this made bombing the runway not only fun for the kills (and i got many that way) but also somewhat equivalent  to dropping the fighter revetments/bomber hangers for launch denial.

you could still take off you just had to work at it.

Been bombing runways for a while now and have been relatively successful.

Some of my favorites:

A P-51 is about to land when  -  kaboom!  Haxxor's bomb got him rolling to a stop.  The same P-51 immediately spawns in and  -  kaboom!  my bomb got him.  We were in high B-17s.   :D  *

Carpet bombed the length of the runway, nailing two Brewster's in the middle.  By the time the bomb stream reached the end of the runway, one of the same Brewster guys spawned in time to get dropped for a second time.   :ahand

Got an entire formation of B-24s mid runway from a 500 pound bomb dropped from a B-29.  :lol

edit:  *  the 51 driver got muted after that.  must have been hot under the collar.
