A Win/Win Proposal
« on: July 13, 2011, 01:06:59 PM »
Hello CM's and AVA Regulars,

I was tasked with the duties of a side CO in the Upcoming Coral Sea Scenario.  This scenario requires a large turnout to make it happen.  At this time it is doubtful that the scenario will be put on, due to low numbers registered.  The deadline for registration to get 75% manning on both sides is this Friday, and in my opinion it is not going to happen.  So I was troubling through how to get the 100+ pilots interested in this scenario some Coral Sea action.  I do know that the AVA is trying to get more folks in the door, so enter my win/win proposal.  I am sugesting that the AVA consider a Coral Sea event in the near future to take advantage of this large group of interested pilots.  What are your thoughts?

I actually gave this idea some consideration the other day (as I'm sure others have in the past), where the AvA could loosely coordinate some set ups to parallell what's happening with scenarios or FSO-type events.

Just may pull in those who want to brush up on whatever is upcoming.

I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.

we did it 3 weeks ago and it was a ghost town. carriers and a small parcel of land. i think mostly people didnt understand the setup and that was probably my fault. we have no problem helping run a scenario if we have some lead time to plan it out.

Actually Shane this is a good idea or at least I think it is. I've been thinking of suggesting we do a setup once a month that mirrors the FSO so people have a place to practice or get a feel for how the event will be.  I wouldn't be against helping the Scenario team either but I believe Scenarios have practice frames already.

I agree, FSO, which by the numbers is very popular and coincidentally is a limited Icon setup, is a perfect compliment for AvA as a place to practice with historical plane sets and to familiarize yourself with a map. Also, once I've botched my one life dinging my prop or getting oiled in FSO I'm still fired up to play right after in AvA if there are people around.

This sort of thing has been tried in the past with mixed success, but it may be a case of not giving it an extended trial to catch on.

I don't see any real downside, as we have to load some sort of scenario anyway.

However the FSO runs three frames and I'm not sure we want to have the same set up in that long.

We could run the FSO map and planeset the week prior to the first frame.

As far as the OP's specific idea, why don't we explore it?

What week would you be suggesting Waystin?

Hello Jimson,

First let me qualify why I threw this out there.  I had 87 players registered for my side of this scenario alone(37 folks on the opposing team).  To a man, all are dissapointed at the prospect of not getting some "Coral Sea" type action.  I think that if you (and yes I would help promote) strike while the iron is hot so to speak, I think it is possible to pull a lot of guys for a single and possibly an ongoing short term event.  The longer this goes past the actual cancellation date the less interested folks will be.  I believe you will see the event cancelled tomorrow.  So to answer your questions, the sooner the better.  The folks that registered are very team active & goal oriented.  Give some reachable objectives using the Coral Sea plane and vehicle set and I think you may have a great turnout.  Obviously I cannot promose it, but I think you will.  Plan it for a Saturday night 8-9 PM EST as most were already confortable with that time frame.  Hope this helps...

Yeah, gotta update the calendar.

Jaeger is up next with Road to Ruin ETO.

Then Shifty is planning an Eastern Front, Long Red Winter.

Next open date is Ravens on the 29th, but I may be running that week for him.

What was supposed to be the original date of the Coral Sea scenario?

Hello Jim,

The test frame was set for July 23rd and the first frame of the actual event was set to run August 6th.

Well, without altering anything much, we could possibly get a Coral Sea set up in starting Friday the 29th.

That would give the 30th for your Saturday night time frame (a week earlier than the original scenario frame one)  Is there any other Saturday night event going on that week or is it an off night?

We don't really want to compete with the SEA.

We could run it as a weekly set up as usual, but could have an informal event on Saturday.

Earlier dates may be possible if we switch things around.

As far as scenarios are concerned, if the Coral Sea is cancelled then you will not see another one running until later this year.  So you will zero competition on that front.  The timeline sounds great, and I will start trumpeting that something fun is going to happen on the 29th once I get the "GO" from the AVA staff.

Hopefully the scenario will go off as planned.

If not, as soon as cancellation of the scenario is confirmed, I'll get with the staff and see if we can reach a consensus.

My hopes to, but I am a realist.  I have already contacted AKKUYA the other team's CO and he thinks this is a great idea.  Hopefully he will chime in here as well.

This looks like a go, as the scenario was indeed cancelled.

Going to get started putting it together.
