I would rather have people volunteer to serve, be it the armed forces, to the homeless shelter, to the live by example than have a I am patriotic just because I stand up every time they play the national anthem attitude.

I served many years ago and I am disgusted with the sight of some of those who stand up and have no idea what i means. I am disgusted when it plays on tv and see people chewing gum, spitting and scratching their private parts and everybody says, look we are patriotic because we stand up.

:salute to those who do try and do their best.  rest can stand up and play the I am a true patriot drama.

I am sorry, but that kind of thing scares the bejesus  out of me.

Movie theaters on military bases do that and a lot of the town around them do as well.

I did not say anything political towards this side or another more than the general mention of national symbols.
Your reply worries me even more.

I guess I will earn a week mute here:

Military theaters play this before any movie.  Everyone stands, everyone pays their respects.  It is appalling to think that there are those who mentally parallel the flag to the current government/situation.  The flag and the anthem represent what we are SUPPOSED to be about.  Everyone in this country, like the current situation or not, reap the benefits of living in a free society where you CAN go to the theater, whenever you want.  Many, I am afraid, have lost sight of this and just think that their lives/world is miserable and begrudge the country they live in.  Live abroad I say, see the world, then return here and enjoy sanitation, clean water, government regulation of the environment to preserve our country for future generations.  Having grown up in the third world I say without a doubt that we have things pretty good, and they were not always that way, they were earned.  That flag, that song, that pledge are not hollow.  They are the soul of this country.

we have RSL (returned and services league) clubs all over the place in Australia and they are fairly well patronised, every day at the setting of the sun the place goes silent and everyone stands, a trumpet plays taps over the loud speaker and this is read out:

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

chokes me up everytime.

we shall remember them....

lest we forget

the choking starts when the bugle plays!

Sounds to me like you forgot why you served.

Let's not forget that folks who serve are human too. We found that out in a bad way here in Texas when one of those who was serving murdered our own troops. There are others on trial now for sport killings.

While my Family appreciates all our troops do, that appreciation stops when anyone tries to put on airs of sainthood.
